The most common causes of GS (Galactic Scourge) crashes are: not enough memory allocated, not all the pieces of GS in the plugins folder, other plugins in the folder (GS uses every dude, outf, and ship resource), and someone tinkering with EV edit (which results in messy crashes and corrupted files).
Here are some solutions, in reverse order:
4. If you think you have corrupted your copies of EV and GS (v. 1.4.5), naturally, the best solution is to D/L a fresh copy of EV and then of GS. But without a T-1 Connection, this will suck. As always, you can send me or Max an e-mail and we will give you an address to send a SASE and a blank CD or Zip. We will then return GS, EV, and the contents of the GS www site for your information.
3. Remove all other plugins
2. Make sure you have at least the files Galactic Scourge and GS Graphics in your plugins folder. If you don't have a PPC, it seems that you probably can't put in GS Extra Systems, but try and see. The display is tiny, so you may as well. If you have memory and speed to burn add the GS Music file. Then there are the cheaters, but I'm sure no one uses those
I. First allocate more memory to the EV application (but you are bright lads, so I'm sure you tried that already. The next trick is since EV loads up all the EV components, then the plugins in alphabetical order your computer has loaded a resource then over written it. This is wasteful. To make it leaner do the following:
II. Duplicate EV Data and EV Graphics, and EV Titles. You can also duplicate EV Music and EV Sounds, but these are less serious.
III. Allocate as much memory as you can to ResEdit.
IV. Now copy the resources from GS into EV. For example:
A. Paste the contents of Galactic Scourge (you can skip the custom icons if you wish) into EV Data, except for Sounds--paste these into EV Sounds, and ppat--paste these into EV Graphics. Then (if you wish to try it) paste the contents of GS Extra systems over what you just pasted into EV Data. ResEdit will ask if you want to over-write resources, say OK.
B. Paste the contents of GS Graphics into EV Graphics (do this in at least 4 batches or ResEdit may choke). Delete Pict 130 and 131 and paste these into EV Titles.
C. To further streamline, you can paste the pict resource of GS Display into EV Titles, and the sound resources into EV Sounds, and the GS Music resources into EV Music.
V. Put your unedited copies of EV in a safe place and the edited copies (with the original names) in the Escape Velocity folder. Now the plugins folder should be empty. You can still put the cheaters or anything you didn't paste in there.
In other words, overwrite the resources of EV with those of GS. Just make sure you do GS Extra systems AFTER Galactic Scourge.
After that overly long description, let me tell you that the development of GS2 ( (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/ev_scourge/attractions.html")http://www.geocities...ttractions.html(/url) ) has been delayed until the beta release of EV3. In addition, while Max and I are both very busy at work ( (url="http://"http://web99.arc.nasa.gov/~astrochem/")http://web99.arc.nasa.gov/~astrochem/(/url) ) we are importing and expanding GS into EVO 1.0.2.
Thank you for your interest.
