I've been having some trouble with the alien fighters. Could anyone tell me sone good ways to destroy them? I've heard that you should move directly over them and shoot, but how do you keep them directly under you?

You really do not have to destroy them to complete the alien missions, so just concentrate on the cruiser. If you want to destroy one, use the forklift.

I'm actually Maridian. Having some trouble with flood-whatevers, so I'll use champion's username.
Here's an idea. (I tried this, IT WAS HARD!).
Get the tractor beam. In the defender. get 3 lasers and just GO SICK! It takes practice to use the defender, but if you don't miss a shot, you can destroy it.
I think so, i got it down to 17% before I missed a shot. Then I gave up. Like always
Maridian, don't use this user name, or i'll use yours.
Also i don't like using the forklift, its just to easy

Ugh, stupid forklift users. I can't stand people who savor cheats like that.
Try using space bombs or heavy rockets. It'll take a few shots though, so it would help to have a fast ship to move towards the fighter after it gets blasted back. A tractor beam also helps if you have lots of turret weapons.

Who do you think you are to call forklift users stupid people? The fact that some people prefer to use the forklift to kill an alien fighter, rather than shoot at it like a mindless moron for 10 minutes does not mean we are stupid, maybe just lazy.

It's been a long time now, but I think EV had Alien Fighter Bombers as well as Alien Fighters (or was that just EVGE). Killing them would be done the same way as all small, fast ships with very high shield regeneration. The Alien Fighter Bombers are VERY dangerous to take on unless you have a full Capital ship.
One method, other than the Forklift (or Black Lightning in EVGE) is to obtain a strong ship with pretty good speed and a beam weapon that pushes the fighter away. What you do is drive toward it at the same speed that the beam is repelling the fighter. You can cut the beam occationally to allow the figher closer in case it's repelled out of damage range. If it's a EVGE Fighter Bomber, keep it at a good distance or it will thump on you. The hard part is keeping the fighter "on the line". That is, if it gets off center of the direction of travel, you will go right past it and have to start over again. It's especially hard it you're trying to capture rather that kill it because it has very little armor, so you have to stop just in time.
I know this method works because I've used it often, but it is a REAL skill thing.

Please. Space Bombs suck. And besides, a space bomb would send the alien fighter flying like a missile, and while you prepare to bomb it again, it shields will already have regenerated.

seriously. space bombs? forklifts? missiles? DEFENDERS? who uses that bullsh_t? get a capital ship and max out its turrets and lasers. buy the best shielding and armor that you can and all of the engine upgrades. sell your stupid_ss ranged weapons - you need a constant stream of fire at close range. once you are ready, get the fighter to chase you and run. get it lined up so that it is coming straight for you on the radar, then hold "a", turn, and shoot. standard monty python. dead in one pass. 30 seconds for the whole maneuver.
try it.

**Strictly speaking, the forklift is not a cheat. More of an Easter egg. After all, it came with the game.

Rebel Cruiser, 4 Proton Turrets, 4 Mass Drivers, 3 Proton Cannons, all speed upgrades, shield regenerator. Outfit your ship this way. One pass, kills almost any ships, especially the alien fighters, the impact is low enough to keep them from spinning out of control, but enough to slow them down and let more ****s hit them. Works for me

**Ya, well that's what you think.
The only effective I've found agaisnt the fighters is to have the thing being pelted by missiles on all sides. You need to have lot's of ships to do this, and not just escorts. You need fleets of ship. X-TREMLY hard to do.
I've never beaten those stupid fighters.

The trick is to grab one with the tractor beam, and gradually bring your ship, and hence also the alien fighter to a stop. The full force of your guns will then focus on the alien.

Useing a weapon with explosion is useless cause the alien fighter is so light. Just beat the daylights out of it with laser weapons and a tractor beam.

Forklift users are babies, and yes the forklift is a cheat other wise it woulda been made available to be purchased. just get a whole fleet o Confed Cruisers and your set. the alien won't stand a chance i killed two at once with my fleet
ow yea, you can destroy anything and you don't even gotta cheat to do it so why bother cheating?

Tractor Beam, Proton/Laser Turrets, Fast Kestrel. Tractor it. It will turn veeeeery slowly. If you can pilot your ship right, you will be able to compensate for this turn by moving your ship as well. Bombard it with the proton cannons and it will die...eventually. With the cruiser, just tractor it and fire away. It won't be able to do anything - just make sure you stay away from the front of it.

The alien fighter is only annouying, I normally just ignor it and jump out of the system. A waste of time to destroy it cause it keeps coming back for more. Ambrosia should have continued with the story line if they had fighters following you all the time.
