Umm, the defender is only good for attacking people, shuttle for delivering cargo.
Defender for war
Shuttle for peace

Not exactly. If you equip the shuttle with a laser cannon you can probably start hunting down defenders. The defenderis not even worth the money you pay for it.

Well, I think the Defender is the most fun ship in the game.
For utility, I have to give the prize to the shuttle, but, well, we're talking about Defenders and shuttles here, so utility obviously isn't part of this. 
I really don't think shields are an issue with either of these ships. They really don't have any.
The Defender has one actual use: Because it's so fast, especially after it's modified (yes I'm sick enough to spend 430,000cr on a 90,000cr ship), it can be used well for escorting or running criminals or basically any mission where sheer speed can help you. It's easily fast enough to outrun and outmaneuver missiles.
Personally, I prefer the Defender. Neither of them's really worth much, though, except as a toy.

My Rapier can take out your shuttle any day....Then again so could an escape pod, if it had weapons...

No crap the Rapier can take out a shuttlecraft. You think I'm stupid enough to go after a human controller in a shuttlecraft?? The escape pod would make a good ship though. It is speedy and invincible

The defender is better for taking down alien cruisers.
The shuttle is better for getting the money to get the ship to get the mission to get the alien cruiser. And then you buy a defender to kill it with.

Discounting weapons, a shuttlecraft is pretty much like a Gunboat- same sheilds and about the same speed. I think that if you got a shuttlecraft and a defender fully upgraded and handed control of both to the computer, the shuttle would <i>probably</i> win. If they were both human, it's hard to see how a shuttle could ever touch a 'fender pilot who knew what he was doing.
I have always been of the opinion that a shuttle upgraded with a trio of lazer cannons will give you the most bang for the buck. Sure, a Confed cruiser could rape a good number of them without breaking a sweat, but you could afford about 800 weaponed shuttles for the same price. =p
In a few plugs, BTW, Defenders can become very, very powerful. I'm pretty sure that FB allows two shield boosters to be bought, among others. Putting a pair of those things on a Defender allows freakish recharge rates.

What???
Please restate this, it is too confusing.
The shuttlecraft can take out the alien cruiser. Give it an RCS upgrade and then get whatever add-ons you want. Then hunt down the thing with your shuttlecraft.
I like to upgrade my shuttlecraft and go after unsuspecting shuttlecraft and defenders.

I made a plug-in that had 1 system in it, were there would always be a Rebel Defender and a Confed Mod. Shuttle (the only way it was modified was that it had lasers) in that system. The times there were 1 of each, the Defender always won. Of course if I put missiles on the shuttlecraft it would be a different story, but I'm too lazy to do that...

in regards to this topic get a shutlle and hire defenders as escorts and go kick some but man thats how i started playing the game for the first time!!!!!

Hey my shuttle can kick a defender's @$$! I got a mass expansion, Javelin rockets and 3 proton cannons. I have killed about 20 defenders. The shuttle is better cause its versitale, it can be a warship or a cargo hauling vessel. The defender just is a piece of **** fighter.
Arc: How can you have not souped up a Defender before? It's one of life's simple pleasures! (Glad I could help. )
korin: Those are AI Defenders you've killed. The AI is distinctly inferior to a human. People have reported killing the Alien Cruiser with both the Defender and the shuttle, so it's probably safe to say that either ship could kill anything in the game, just because of pilot skill.
I'll admit that the Defender isn't a very good cargo hauling ship (although cargo pods can make it possible), but you won't find a better ship to run criminals with, just because of its speed...
And you can fit Javelins on the Defender too. Rather a handy upgrade, actually. Makes taking out heavy fighters or clippers much easier.
