For the LAN, you should just keep trying. Scan first, then probe the router for connections, you should get something.
The gateway is tricky, but possible. First, make a copy of Uplink, so you don't screw your original up too bad if something goes wrong. Also: backup your Agent files by making copies and placing them in a separate folder.
If you have your gateway downloaded (presumably from A.W.O.L., or whatever else), it should have two graphics files and a text file inside, as well as the readme. Open the "Data" folder in your uplink folder, and there will be several files, as well as two folders, titled "graphics" and "data". Open the "data" folder, there should be a "gateways" folder inside. Drop the text file from the downloaded gateway inside. Head back to the "Data" folder. Open "graphics", you should see around fourty files and folders. Open the folder entitled "gateway". Drop the two graphics files from the download (should have a .tif attachment to the file name) into the folder. Close the window(s) and start Uplink. This should work, but Uplink wasn't exactly designed to be casual developer friendly, so let me know if there are any problems.
