Too slow???

Hi I am new to the uplink webboard, but I just decided to have a go at the game. The problem is that it seems to be running way to slower than it should even with the settings set to 640 480 in window screen. I'm not sure of the exact requirements for uplink but I think it should be able to run on a beige G3/300 with 6 megs of video ram and 416 of regular ram, does uplink require more power to run??? Other than that it seems to be great

So sould I give up, tough it out or is there anyway to make it go faster?

Uplink seems to run slow for most people, try it in OS X. Also, are you using a Logitech mouse?

Hi Infinate, I remember you from the Nova boards. I'm just curious about in what ways it is running slow? Only because, I thought the same until I was able to upgrade my Gateway and CPU's. Before that, I complained about Uplink being really clumsy. Anyway, I'm using OSX so, you guys might be talking about something else.

SlaVtiCkus: I am using an "apple desktop bus mouse II" & I havn't been able to install OSX as of some problems.

suydam: I am having to use the software mouse otherwise it just goes way to slow like jumping around and it only started getting unbearable on the 3rd tuatorial mission.

I just looked up the requirements 128mb RAM, G3 or better, OS 9 or X (Mac OS X native!) so is it me or are the requirements wrong???

The requirements are missing the text "a very fast graphics card."

It's not so much the computer as the graphics card, afaik. I hope they are working on fixing this in the next release.

Just like I'll never be able to run UT 2003 on my machine, some people will not be able to run Uplink very well on much older machines. That's just how things work, and there's no reason to get pissed off about it. Just be glad that you can (technically) play it at all. That said, there should be some speed improvements for some people in the next version.

Lol didn't you just get a beige/266 or something like that? I can't run UT 2003 on my machine either but thats why i'm saving my money.
I decided to add all the ram I could to uplink and it works quite a bit better, just not perfect. I've got it set as 640 480 in window mode at 16bit and using software mouse.

Hope that made sense and thanks for all your replys guys.

Now... I don't want to start trouble... since you are a moderator after all... but comparing UT 2003 to Uplink is kinda outta control. I mean, most people won't be able to play UT 2003. I, personally, am lucky enough to have a computer capable of running it. Looking at the graphics of Uplink, one would expect a computer capable of UT 2003 above 80 fps should be able to do Uplink at at least 80 fps, no? While its hard to gauge the frames, i should be able to click a box, and have it realize i'm clicking that box right away. I should be able to dial a number with 100 links in my list as with 1. In my opinion, while I know this is a direct port, I think there is some really sloppy coding. While I don't know much C/C++, I think I could port Uplink in REALBASIC with faster graphics than this! Hopefully with patches and such Contraband will get this together and bring the speed up.
