    • Questions about a hacker trace

      3 5 435

Before I go spend a whole lot of time on this: to do a hacker trace, doesn't one just simply follow logs from bounce to bounce until you get to the hacker? So I follow the first log "victim to point A," go to A and find "routed B to victim," etc...

Seems like this would take a while. I am on the right track, though, right?

    • I haven't done those missions (cause your neuromancer rating will sink to the bottom of the sea), but I believe so. I don't know if logs are modified/deleted, but you may need a log undeleter to check...

    • From Modlink's guide:

To start with, you will need to break into the computer of the company that hired you, as they do not give you sufficient access to view the logs. Once you are into the system you are told in the mission statement, enter the Logs. On the email, there will be a date and time that the hack occurred. This isn't the actual time, this is the time they first noticed it. Look though the logs, and look for the one with the closest date BEFORE the one you are given. This will be the log you need to trace. Use the Log UnDeleter on that log, note down the IP and the time/date of the log, and disconnect. Enter the IP you noted down into the IP Lookup to add it to your links. Now break into that system, enter the logs, and look for a log that has the same date as the one you noted down (It should be a bounce log). Use the Log UnDeleter on that log, and note down the FIRST IP on the bounce log (the 'From' IP). Disconnect from the system, and repeat this process until you get to a Personal Computer. Reply to the mail, adding the name of the person who owns the computer to the mail.

    • Thanks a lot. I was sort of on the right track. This particular one wouldn't require an undeleter. I found the log to follow, but with my neuromancer rating in mind, I think I'll just abandon this one. I moved up a level doing other stuff, so I can skip this type altogether.

    • They modify their logs, so the one you saw wasnt the real one. Did yours say "Trace recent balance transfer" in the desc? because those are much, much easier. Also, I never really pay heed to my neuromancer, I do not think it really affects anything.
