Deteced on the Undetectable Gateway?

I am very new at this, just minutes into the game, but already I have hit a snag:

I spent all my hard-earned money on that Gateway upgrade with the radio-transmitter that renders you "completely undetectable." No way they can find me.

Then, I go hacking into Social Security database, and I let myself be sloppy with the trace on me, figuring, well, according to Gateway, I can't be found.

But after the mission, I got a note from the gov't asking me to pay a $1000 fine.

My question, simply, is why did I waste $15,000+ on a computer that would make me undetectable if I got detected minutes later?

What am I missing?

I think that means that you can't be passive traced. Active traces still work.

In the windows 1.31 version that gateway offers no protection at all due to a bug. I don't know if controband fixed the bug or looked over it.

In earlier versions of Uplink the gateway worked as advertised. Apparently they removed this ability and did not change the description.

I know it is a straight-port, but couldn't you of at least changed the mistake? Also, I think it just makes it so that they cannot find your computer, but they still know which one did it (i.e no use to self-destruct your gateway)

EDIT--bodadem, how did you suddenly lose all your karma?? I mean, you deserved it before, but you stopped using AOL speak...

I think from a realism point of view, you're probably right. A gateway you access wirelessly can't be traced very easily. You'd still lose the gateway, but your home computer would be safe, and therefore your identity. Since regular Uplink gateways don't keep logs of your identity anyway, the behavior would be the same.

<edit>I found out why...1. Don't spam the boards. :eek: you write out your abcs ONCE and you lose some karma..i didnt see"dont write out your ABC's in the rules anywhere....... 2.Please stop trying to bypass registration restrictions.....Most of you wont know about this....but is Adriac reads this.....well...he knows...

How do I change the setting so that I no longer receive an email everytime someone adds a comment to this thread? I can't seem to find it!

I'm not sure, but I would bet that it is in your user profile. Look for the word "profile" at the forum main menu (near the top right corner), and click on that to get through to your profile. Down at the bottom there are two boxes about email. I have both set to "no" and don't get any emails from here at all.

Sadly, I have directed my email program to treat all Ambrosia email as spam and trash it to avoid receiving more email every time someone posts something about karma or what not.

I just had a simple question about this game! I didn't want to receive 30 new emails!

And yes, I changed my profile, but it did not stop the email notification from coming.

A major bug in this board's construction, if you ask me.

We started dealing with this problem almost a year ago. I blame my self partly. Last summer during the 1.2 (aka Nakatomi) beta test I was busy testing and working with the (at the time) new mod system the thought never crossed my mind to check that gateway. If I had and found it not to be working right I probably could of gotten Chris to fix it. In the old days you had to hack the data folder and alter the gatewaydef text file and the third or forth one down on the list was always hardcoded to be untraceable. That was how myself and others made custom wireless gateways. Then Chris put in the new mod support and the whole way of doing things changed.

I think I spotted the original problem here, though not the solution. When you start a topic, it asks you whether you want to be notified by email of all postings in the thread. There's a check box for it. Presumably it was checked when you hit "send". (I don't get emails even though I started a topic, because I left that box unchecked)

I don't know how to get that unchecked once the thread is started. Clicking the "edit" button on the original post does not bring that checkbox option back.

Deleting the original post would solve it, because it would delete the whole thread, but you have to be a staffer to delete.

(Sorry to add another email to your pile)
