For type/creator codes, you need to use Carbon. Cocoa has no such methods.
With drag-and-drop, you need to set the same Info.plist keys that you do for a document-based application. You can then set your controller as the "Document Class" and it can handle it as if it were an actual document-based app. (Note: this should work but I've never actually tested it. It's how doc-based apps work, though.)
