      Hello all,
      This game looks interesting, but I've never seen such a frustrating interface! I'm still trying to figure out how to copy a file. It seems like I'm supposed to start the file copier, select the file, then select a memory slot, except how do I do the last one? Clicking on the memory slot doesn't do a thing. If I double-click on the copied file, I can sometimes move it to the memory slot, but I rarely manage to do that before I get traced. What am I missing?

      To run it back, use it in 'other' section of the comm menu...

    • I had problems running the Tutorial myself (got stuck in purchased Trace Tracker v1.0 instead of 2.0) so...

      To copy a file you launch file_copy, click on target file, wait for copy to finish. Now, click on the copy task (the one that says select a memory slot) and THEN click on target memory slot. Copy complete.

      To get traced slower, just add more hops with computers you find at InterNIC. To begin with use "Public Access" Servers.

    • I had the exact same problem. Once I figured it out I was rolling along quite fine.

      Apparently, computer interfaces have changed a bit in the years leading up to 2010. When the progress bar for your copy is done, you have to click on the blue middle part where the progress indicator used to be, between the two lighter blue box things at the ends... a single click will pick up the file, and then you can click on the memory location and it'll put it there.

      Secondly, go to InterNIC (you don't even need to bounce there) and click the Browse/Search button. Type in "public" in the text box and click the "Filter" button to filter your results to those just containing the word "public." You'll get lots. Add 10 or 20 of those servers to your map by pressing the button with a + on it to the left of the server's name and address. Now you have lots of servers to bounce around with. Now when you want to hack in somewhere, use those servers. Your path should go to InterNIC first, and then maybe the Uplink Test Computer, and then a bunch of those Public Servers, and finally your destination. Once you're done with everything at the destination, you can hack into InterNIC (they won't trace you, and you only need to find the password once) and delete the log files there.

      Remember that the web board is your friend! If someone as clueless as I am was able to figure out this game just by asking a few questions here, then I'm sure you'll figure out this game in no time. It really is a cool game, don't trash it yet! I'm thinking of registering myself.

    • I had the same problem as Florence, but figured it out eventually. Thanks for all the tips Luca. But, are you sure that all of those extra Public servers work? That was my first tactic but, then I read in the "Help/Active Traces" that it only takes seconds for a trace to work on Servers that you don't have a password for, or that you haven't broken into already.

    • Suydam, your point is very true. It takes less time for them to trace those machines, but that will become noticable only by the time you try to hack into a system with a Proxy. By then you should have a good enough computer to gain admin access to "Internal Services" machines (You don't need to login as admin to have admin access; you need to break the password). However, if the traces aren't too fast for you (yet), there's no problem with using PublicAccess servers. And you can always delete them later.

      Thanks but, you've gone a little over my head. How do you tell when a system has a Proxy?

    • There is a lot of information on Security systems in Uplink itself. Access "Help" in "Uplink Internal Services" and you should find a lot of information. In short, though:

      Proxies are yet another hacker preventation system found on computers which store sensitive (read: important) information. They prevent the editing of those records.

      IP Scan or HUD ConnectionAnalysis allow you to determine whether or not a target machine has a proxy. The security services can also be determined from Admin/Security on the target machine when logged in. Finally, if you log in to a target machine (such as the Social Security Database) and you are not able to change any details or logs, you definately know that a proxy is active.

      A proxy can be disabled using Proxy_Disable and bypassed using Proxy_Bypass, where the apps are of a version higher or equal to the proxy.

    • Thanks for the info everyone. I did do the tutorial, even had to redo the whole thing because I had the same problem psn had, but it doesn't explain how the interface works. Even the bit on how to move the tutorial window is wrong. I think I also tried what Luca explained, but I'll try again.

      Apparently in 2010 we will have incredibly powerful computers, but the interface will have gone back to Hollywood movie standards (you know, before they invented the mouse and the space bar).

      Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll keep trying. I do hope the game is worth all that trouble 🙂

    • Part of the fun in the game is figuring out how everything works, and how exactly you're supposed to complete missions. It's the reason why not much is explained. In the first beta, I was pretty clueless too, but I managed to get it after a while. Keep at it folks, it's definitely worth it!

      Also, as a note: The better the title description for the topic, the less chance of duplicate topics, and the greater chance people will get their questions answered quickly. "One question before I trash it..." is not very descriptive.

    • WARNING: Read at own discretion; if you are interested about the interface and how it works, read other posts.

      Some items such as "WHY THE (inadmissible) DOESN'T THIS (tastless) TUTORIAL (I'm not routing THAT! -146.238.43.2) WINDOW STOP MOVING AROUND WHEN I CLICK TO RELEASE IT??!??" are plain wrong. Even if you're supposed to figure it out on your own, then at least the Introduction shouldn't attempt to mislead you (see Trace Tracker v1.0).

      I admit that it's interesting, for some, to figure out the ins and outs. I know I do a lot of trial and error on that part, but some things you shouldn't need to figure out with trial and error. And the Tutorial should not get stuck because you buy the wrong application.

      And, even with that said, people's tastes vary. Some may like figuring out it all, some may like figuring out parts and others may like to have the solutions as a "Sorry, I just can't do it!" safety net. Everyone's different.

      Sorry for this, it's just that, well, yeah. Interface. The interface of a hacker should work with the hacker, not against him.

    • psn, I agree completely. I don't mind figuring out some of the rules, but figuring out why a window doesn't behave the way ANY window in ANY OS that I know of does, and what the **** those guys invented to replace drag-and-drop, that's just a waste of my time, energy and patience.

      It's a game. If you hate it that much, don't play it. In the game, there are very few (read: none) times when you have to move a window. Also, its really quite nice when you get used to it.
