But, as I posted earlier, the game just quits for me at 10:00 on March 29, 2010.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a date when it quits - I've gotten into April.

      My issues:

      1. On OS9, it won't run in full screen.
      2. On OSX, it will run in full screen but the color scheme is utterly whacked out.
      3. On OS9, the games slows down to an unbearable rate after a minute or two (for example, I have to hold the mouse button down for a few seconds on any button in the game for it to respond and when filling in fields it takes a few seconds for a letter to show up). I have not tested this on OSX because the color problems render it unplayable.

My machine: iMac 500 MHz G3, 256 MB RAM, 8MB VRAM ATi Rage Pro.

I have almost the same machine, same problems. After poking around the other Uplink forum, I came across what is likely the problem. Read (url="http://"http://www.introversion.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=3&topic;=10000917")this.(/url) Edit: Actually, after checking, that may not be the problem. That topic was on how Uplink needs OpenGL to play well. But I checked, and I have OpenGL, so that must not be it. You would think that a game that small would run great on any machine. Sheesh. I really, really hope Ambrosia polishes their version, and that all the problems with the demo are only in the Introversion version. They should at least make it so that older computers can run this game. Or at least take stock of what users want changed in the game, then release a few updates to the game improving it.
Yech, after reading the other topic on the problems with the demo, I'm not too impressed by Introversion's abilities to iron out problems with the game. Even less so when I look at how many patches they keep pouring out. (I've noticed at least two, and I haven't been aware of this game for that long.)
I hope that Ambrosia brings this game up to their level of quality before they release it, that would make all the difference for this game.

    • One of the reasons for all the Introversion patches is that it seems they added a whole new feature in version 1.2. LAN's. It appears that they did not exist propr to this version (or so I have deemed from their change logs and the forums). It also appears that in one of the later versions they added the ability to create skins, LAN's and new gateway configurations easily. The patches seem to be less of bug fixes, and more of adding features.

Also, many things should get improved (new features etc) when the Dev CD comes out. I sure hope there is some way to make it compatible for Mac, but I'm pretty sure there won't be a way. After all, it is changes to the entire source. :frown:

      ------------------

    • The game has been out for a year and a half and has only had 4 patches. Not too bad, and yes most included new content. You should also keep in mind Introversion is just a group of 3 guys (only one programmer) who made the game in their spare time. They are now full time game designers, having quite their other jobs, but this explains some of the less than optimal aspects of the game. 🙂

    • Well, user-made PC patches won't work on Mac... Sad fact of life. But haven't we a modding community of our own? If it comes to it, we can definately petition IV for a Mac Dev CD... But I doubt it will. They're smart guys.

    • The only problem is that I am not sure Introversion has control of the Mac source. As Contraband did the port for Ambrosia I am not sure what the legalities are concerning who controls the source code. Even if IV controls the code licensing may prevent them from releasing it, without Ambrosia's nod. 🙂

    • Ambrosia SW's just the publisher... Of the shareware version, at that. I'd be surprised if they had rights to anything beyond the executable. Even if they did, Ambrosia's cool 🙂 They'd do it.

In any event, it is within IV's power. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

    • Ouch. Talk about a misunderstanding, read (url="http://"http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/news.html")this.(/url)
Looks like the demo had been planned to be released much later.

The point I was trying to make is that it will most likely be difficult to port the user-made PC changest o the mac. Whoever makes the changes will have to release their source changes. Then someone will have to go and re-compile them for the mac. Of course, you also have the fact that the data structure of the mac version is different.

      ------------------

    • Well, at least custom gateways, LANs, and skins work on the mac version.

    • The point I was making was that Mac versions of Dev CD patches would require a total port, unlikely to happen.

Same thing happens on mine when I try and run it in OS9. in OS X it runs just fine until I hit the "map" screen...at which point it freezes (see relevant topic)
