    • Net plugin proposal


      I couldn't decide between posting this on the Engineering board or here, but it seems to fit both categories.

      I've been hanging around GameRanger quite a bit lately, and every Ares player I've talked to has shared something in common: There is not a net plugin that "completes" the single-player Ares races (at least a good one. For all I know, there isn't one). What I have in mind is adding the Ishiman Heavy Cruiser to the net play through such a plugin, as well as the Cantharan Heavy Cruiser, Gateship, and whatever else I'm leaving out. If anyone would be up to creating such a net plugin, not only I but the rest of the community would be much appreciated. I'd create it myself if I weren't into the graphics side of developing plugins. 😉

    • Also, I just thought of a good way in which the Ishiman could attain additional resources (but I have no idea if the Ares engine would support it). The player could construct the astro-miner spacecrafts, send them off to an asteroid / asteroid field, have them collect the asteroid pieces after being blown apart, and return the pieces to the Ishiman base. This would then give the Ishiman additional resources, though such a form of attaining resources could be dangerous, both because of enemy assaults and the nasty minerals which hang around the asteroids. But I don't know... Would this be possible?

    • Well, I know next to nothing- no, no, make that Absolutely NOTHING about coding, and I never really tried graphics work, but I'll ry helping out if I can. Maybe I'll go for the graphics work.

      Well, that's the point. All of the vessels I mentioned are already used in Ares. In other words, there wouldn't be any necessary graphic development needed. All that really needs to be done is combining the mentioned features into a net plugin...

      Most probably, yes. But the coding required would be pretty formidable. Pallas could probably handle it, I suppose, being as he is.

    • Could you not do it like the two Shoplifter missions in the Ares missions but just have the fragments float forward when the miners gets near the planet?

    • Setting it up so that a race (here the Ishman) could get extra resources by mining would be easy enough to do, in principle. Trouble is, its, er difficult to get it to work properly. Multiple versions of the player's planet, each with a successively higher earning power and or ship building range would be the way I would do it, with conditions set to alter the nature of the planet, or to substitute the planet for a higher earning one as the mining progresses. Damned difficult to get it to work though. Rather like the cruise missile project.

    • Alrighty, so it does seem that the mentioned features are possible. Would you developers like to get together and create this thing, along with additional features as we go? Although I can't assist with the coding, I'm always open for graphics (though I don't believe there will be many, if any, needed).
