Ambrosia Garden Archive

    • I have a simple questions about karma on Ambrosia's web boards. When someone receives a karma of -10 they are banned from the boards. Then what stops them from just making a new account or posting unregistered?

    • I'm not sure we are supposed to answer this. I'll leave that up to the mods who've been around since day one (or two)!! Anyway, I didn't want you to think that I was just ignoring you.

    • Yeah, I know, I haven't been a mod any longer than Deb, but I'll give you a partial answer. If the member has reached the -10 status, that screen name is blocked. A person can start a new account, or post as unregistered on the forums where that is permitted. Hopefully, they will have made some character adjustments. If such person continues to abuse the privaledge of posting, the administration can ban that individual's IP address. At that point, they cannot log on without having a different computer. I'd prefer it, GrahamVH, if you didn't try to test the system out. 🙂

Don't worry, I don't plan on testing the system out (that's why I asked). In my case locking my ip address out would lock out my entire network out (the ip address that you see is actually my router). Even though I am slightly tired of having (0) clean for a karma rating, I don't think I want to lower it.

Edit: No the DEL has made a spelling mistake "privaledge" :).

Minor correction. An IP ban has nothing to do with the computer that you log in from, but rather the internet link that your computer, or computers, are using. If you own a static IP then regardless what computer you use on that IP you will be blocked. If you take your computer next door to your friend's house who has a static IP then your computer will work fine on the ASW boards(assuming that IP isn't blocked as well).

If you have a dynamic IP then it is likely a generic IP ban will be done which will block the entire IP range that the network provider the user is using has to offer. This will mean that in order to circumvent the ban you will need to switch internet providers.

All in all yes you can get around the karma ban, but abusing it will result in an IP ban. Yes you can get around an IP ban, but it is time consuming and likely costly. And at some point you just have to ask yourself, "Is this worth it for a web board?" In my opinion it is just easier not to be a jerk.

Really. To ask a question such as this is ...(Zero is at a loss of words)... (No offense Graham!). If they have 'achieved' such a low rating, if you will, they really don't want help or to be helped; they're just here to have fun. They have done something to deserve the hand-upon-hand Karma slaps, everybody's not against them.

On the other hand, I really resented my change of name rather than the karma itself. I liked seeing the Upstanding Citizen part, not a good egg. A Good Egg?
Oh great, I'm an omelet, reduced to someone's breakfast.
      Yumm......

    • Well, the question's legit, not pathetic. It seems to me that he was just wondering. It's when we place an attitude (usually negative) on a person's post that we're close to flaming. I thought that he was just curious, and I thought it was a direct question.

    • Debra's assumption it correct, I was just curious about how the system works (without testing it out for myself).

Edit: I'd rather be a good egg than clean. At least I would taste good then. Hmmm, I've been around here for about 2 years and never had a karma change. Can I have a karma of ??

    • I don't know if that is possible. But be aware that Karma comes when you least expect it. I got my first point when I posted a response to a newbie question on the Uplink boards. It was, "How do you search in the Academic Records Mainframe" (or something like that). If you have played Uplink, then you would probably say that it is a stupid question. My second point came in a topic where a user was having PoG crash. I suggested that because he reinstalled, the license file said he was registered, but the game said that he wasn't, causing the crash. When it was clear that that was the problem, I asked for people to acknowledge that I was the one who came up with the solution. Stark Bledfast gave me a Karma point instead :).

      Motion is impossible:
If an archer fired an arrow at a target, it would have to travel halfway before reaching the target. To reach that distance, the arrow would first need to travel halfway. To reach that distance, the arrow would first need to travel halfway. To reach that distance, the arrow would first need to travel halfway. To reach that distance, the arrow would first need to travel halfway. To reach that distance, the arrow would first need to travel halfway...

      That can be easily rectified...

I hope that some spammer on AoL doesn't come here and decide to abuse the boards. I have enough internet related trouble already.
