    • Full Cinema 4D on cover disc

This is for the US readers. You europeans knew about this last month. 🙂 I was in Borders Books and saw the British magazines 3D World (issue 44) and Coumputer Arts (issue 88) have a full version of Cinema 4D on their discs with both Mac and PC versions. Also, 3D World has a full version of the World Builder landscape program for PC.

      Insert profound thought
      or clever witticism here

    • Its actually Cinema 4D CE 6 (the CE standing for cover edition). Its a feature disabled version of C4D and you cant render images above a certain size, i forget how big, around 400-500 pixels wide i think. You can however render to screen and then use a screen capture tool to get bigger images (and it doesnt violate the license). its still a really good program for coldstone graphics.

      ------------------

    • So given that the "real" C4D is at version 8.5 currently, how does C4D CE v6 compare feature-wise?

I looked at the CD. As I recall not only was it feature-disabled, but it required registration after thirty days. Thank you but no thanks, Maxon. I'd prefer to pay my money and have the real thing. Advertise this one as a demo instead.

    • The registration code is free, from the maxon website. All in all this a pretty sweet deal, much better than Maya PLE.

    • Perhaps, but Wings3D and Blender3D are free, no strings attached. Though they can be a bit hard to get used to, they definetly are the cheapest option 🙂

    • Yes, but C4D is SO much mor powerful than either of those programs, Wings is a good polygon modeler, but its renderer is TERRIBLE, and blender renders pretty fast and look ok but its interface makes it very hard to use.

neither of those programs offer even half the features of Cinema, and C4D IS free.

Thanks for the news on the free registration. I'll load the thing up and try it. I render in Carrara these days but I need more options in modelling.

    • Will Poser take Cinema 4D?

It will indeed. I did a little testing to see if the C4d v.6 CE would export. It turns out it uses a non-standard formatting for .obj that neither my Poser4 nor Bryce4 would recognize....but UVmapper (the free application from Steve Cox), read it fine and exported in standard ASCII format -- after that there was no problem. I did not look at the 3ds or DXF paths.

This seems a very good deal. I've been studying the manual and you've got some nice poly tools, NURBs, hyper-NURBS (which are kinda like Sub-D's), metaballs and a basic particle system. Also, there is word going around that for a hundred bucks you can bring it up to C4d +, which I would presume makes it upgradeable as well. This was a special offer, and expires Nov 30 as well -- I'm looking into it now.

Of course figure creation and rigging is a black art. The new book by Bloodsong, now at Amazon for a mere thirty bucks, should make it at least a medium-gray. (Poser 5 Figure Creation Secrets). Word from the newly wise, though; start small.

    • Thank you! Was the .obj file not compatible just with a mac? Will it work with a pc? I've got software (one that was free) that will convert all of the files for pc Poser into files for mac Poser. So perhaps I don't have to worry about it. Thanks again!

MacConverter and MacInstaller, eh? Two of the best free utilities ever released. Steve Cox's UVmapper would be at least four of the remaining ones. I did not test with PC...mostly, I just wanted to ensure that the c4D cover edition wasn't export-disabled. One further find...the normals were reversed upon import to Poser (an easy fix in the import options).

    • Macaddict has it too, in I think the December issue...

The box said Windows 95 or greater...so why doesn't it work on a Mac?
