    • PNG problem

Under instructions i am stopping using jpg's in my game. Unfortunately pct's are too big so they are out of the question. This leaves png's I saved my startup screen I made in photo shop as a PNG-8 file. For some reason when I start my game it doesn't show up. The event links work but the actual picture doesn't work.
      Please help

Isn't PNG-8 something you choose when saving a file for the web..?

    • I have fixed the problem with the pngs. Unfortunately they are over 6 times bigger than jpgs. Somebody said to me that jpg's cause memory leaks that can eventually crash a game. Is this true? Cause if it is not then I am sticking with jpg.

    • Use jpgs, then let some people with different amounts of memory test it for you to see if you need more RAM using jpgs then you need if you use PNG and PICTs...

    • I try to only use pcts. I find that pngs don't always work. And I don't think that Coldstone likes jpgs. I could be wrong.

    • The only advantage to PNGs is there transparency support. Exporting from PS 7 creates very nice transparent/semi-transparent PNGs that actually... well, amazingly... they work. Anyway, PCTs are in general better, but PNGs have better transparency support (in my experience) so I go with them for most things.

    • Yeah, I remember reading about that once, but don't really remember how to do that and WAY too lazy to search!!! Do you know off the top of your head?

    • Debra, if you're using photoshop, all you have to do is delete the background in your image and put all the art in layers. Save for web as png-24 and click the "transparency" option. All transparent image data in the layers of your graphic remain transparent in the flattened png.(Note-does not work for map interface) This is how it works in Photoshop 6, anyway. If you don't have this, you may have to do some kerazy hoo-haa with alpha channels and stuff. Ellrx knows.

    • Well I'll stick with jpgs for now and see how it goes. There can't be that big a problem if CS accepts them. It just says that they are no good for transaprency

JPEG can also do nasty things to images with a lot of white in them. Basically, JPEGs are fine for most things, but for transparencies, PNG is the way to go.

    • Super easy way to go (requires PS 7):

Export as PNG in PS 7. Period. That's all you need to do 🙂 If you have 6 or below then you'll have to follow the steps above, but with PS 7 it's a breeze. 😉

(PS=Photoshop for those who are reading this and going, "huh?")

    • Well, I couldn't get the vector mask out of there, but I double-clicked on it and changed the opacity of the mask to 30%. Then saved as suggested. Looked pretty dang good! It loads into the map when you're working on Coldstone as opaque, but not when you're running the game.

    • Well thank you all for answering my questions. As the CGE showcase has a 15MB limit I need my files a small as possible which is why I prefer a 30k jpg to a 150k png and a 400kb AAC music track to a 3MB AIFF file
