    • Far Reaches Demo for the Mac is Online

I finally managed to put a BETA (which is another way of saying that I'm the only one who's tested it so far) online. It's a large 38 megs, but please try it anyway. Hopefully the links should work ok.

Far Reaches is a science fiction RPG. It has three character classes, each with unique abilities, and a skill point based advancement system. Please take a look and let me know what you think -- the good, the bad, the icky, etc. I haven't had anyone else play it yet, so I'd appreciate all the input I can get. Thanks.

    • The game doen't seem to work for me. When I try to open it it says the application that created this was not found.

    • man that is the funnest game ever! i open the app, it says it is too big to be opebed by simple text! the plot is just,...... amaizing! you didnt even have to include all those fancy graphics and mp3's!

now what happened is when i downloaded the game in os9, all the icons that you double click look like simple text files and when i double click the os9 game file "Far Reaches" it just tries to open in simple text. i tried to look for something to drop it into but no such luck. its like something stripped everything the mac files talk to out of eachother or something, like what happens on the internet of peecees sometimes.

    • That's so weird. Maybe it got messed up when I stuffed the file or something. I'll try to upload an unstuffed file instead. Maybe that'll help. Thanks for trying though.

      Outlandish

      ------------------

    • You guys are doing better than I am. I have been trying for hours with my dial-up connection to get it to download. Part way through the downloading stops and starts over from the beginning. I had what said it was a completed app, but when I went to unstuff it, it was only 3 meg. That one took over 2 hours alone.

      Insert profound thought
      or clever witticism here

    • I've got the same problem as everyone else, both Far Reaches and Far Reaches(X) show up as documents instead of applications. Did you by chance stuff it on a PC? I'm just wondering why there is a "RESOURCE.FRK" folder.

Good luck getting it all resolved, I'll be waiting anxiously for a demo. πŸ™‚

Either way I opened up both classic and X versions in pico (SimpleText will probably open it too), and thought it was funny that the first word in the first line was "Joy!" I'm easily amused.

However you compressed it, it stripped away the file types/creator types of all the files, these are what your computer uses to match apps with they're generated/compatible files. In most situations the most important is the file type code, thaz why a multitude of applications can view JPEG graphics, no matter what app was used to create it.

Yes "Joy! peff^" joy peff to the world, i have often wondered about this convention, and what the inside joke was between the RB coders when they started, its a signature file start. Those of you equipped with BBEdit, will notice that everything with the exception of; in game dialog, menu items, and other miscellaenous text is encrypted. Go ahead drop your data files/app onto BBEdit. I just thought i'd give everyone this little bit of information, just to let you know that technically there is no way to protect your plot twists...just in case you build an epic and someone leaks the plot within an hour of its release.
      ------------>>>>
A strange but true thing that might have occurred. In the Game Options interface under miscellaneous you might have entered a reserved Creator Code...
      examples:
      Ogle---QuickTime
      ttxt---Simple Text
      8Bim---PhotoShop
      GKON--Graphic Converter
      APPL--all consuming application marker

or even still you might have used a file type for a creator code
      possibly

' ???? ' ---the all purpose i dunno, that brings up the 'open with alternate app' dialog
      'sfil'- apple sound file

and handful of examples out of the thousands, past present and future.

either way outside of your compression software screwing with things this is one of the other scenarios that might've possibly eluded you indefinitely..

    • You can force your computer to think that it is an application in OSX. Just type .app after the name. This will only work in OSX.

    • I apologize for the messed up file, that's very disappointing. I did stuffit on a PC and had no idea that it would screw it up. Took me forever to upload it too. Anyway, I'm stuffing it on my Mac this time and I'll try to re-upload the file soon. Then I'll test it by downloading it and trying it on the mac. So sorry for the inconvience.

Of course you could always add a bunch of dialog events that aren't actually called in the game to muddle and confuse your plot-line for everyone who just peeks into the files without actually playing. πŸ˜‰

    • I just put up a new file that was compressed on my Mac. Hopefully, it should work. I'm going to try and download it on my Mac just to make sure it works I uploaded it with my PC since the ftp software is on the PC). If anyone has a high-speed connection, mayber they can test it and let everyone know. It'll take me awhile to find out since my connection is soooo slow. I'll get it all working eventually. Thanks.

Now, hopefully I'll get some time to play it in the next day or so. πŸ™‚

    • i have trouble reading some of the dialog txt, then again the game itself seems a bit dark. if the txt was all white it would help a bit. im in the 3rd level somewhere. some alien in the 1st level tears off when he sees me, kinda funny. i like the close up portrait painting, its done very well. the game play is decent but seems very abrupt, a bit more so then coldstone. decent so far and easy to pick up.

    • I must say that I'm impressed! Good job, The only thing that bothers me, though i assume it'll be changed before final release is the hit/injury sounds. The game is really original in graphics and music, you should have all the effects original too.

      Good job once again. πŸ™‚

One guestion... how did the game know my name (nickname actually, but you know what i mean)? How did you manage to set this up?

    • I have a comment about the download process. I have a "Blank page" that shows up when I click the link for the beta download. Did you know that?

PS I can't play it on my iMac. It's way to dark for me to read. Took me a while to max the contrast and brightness btu ti helped only a little. Any ideas? <added>

      Nice game.

      Things i might change>

the map of your house when you use doors that you go up in to you should xeit the room via the bottom otherwise you unintentionaly reenter the room a few times while leaveing

add an switch event for dialogs like the closest and talking to Jenna and your aunt ect so that everytime i accident bump the event tile or npc i dont get the same dialog (make it reset once you leave a room)

the storyline of the viedo game is confusing ( igot that i was playing 'mace' in the game but the gender and refs to 'bryce' (sp?) confused me (the first Jenna convo)

lastly you need a rewrite on some of your text (ie the sentence in the explorer class " Becuase you've learn so much...." dosent need the 'Because')

but aside from those quick comments i really enjoy the music, Graphics and the feel (granted i played a total of 15 mins today)

      Good Work

i'll try to play more and comment again.

oh well bumpin my post count

      Albader

i would guess yes since the HTML code used to link the d/l is "<a target="_blank" href="http://www.outlandishstudios.com/FarReachesMAC.sit">"

the 'target="_blank"' tells your browser to open a blank page then points it to the .sit file which your browser then realizes it need to d/l this thing

this conclues today mini HTML lesson.

    • Outlandish, I got a chance to play some of Far Reaches, and I am impressed. The graphics are great, and the music has a Blade Runner feel (I really enjoyed the Electric Sheep joke, btw). The plot-line held my attention and I'm looking forward to find out how the story resolves.

      Suggestions:

-As mentioned before I think that the dialog graphic could be a bit lighter.

-After exploring the cargo ship for a while, I came to a map that I couldn't get out of. It looked like a walkway through two tunnelly looking things...I can take a screenshot if that would help.

-For some reason by the time I had reached the cargo ship, my task list included two "Find the processor" tasks...even though I had found the processor. I assume that each time you interact w/ the computer before finding the processor it adds the task (or something like that), if that's the case you might want to make it a one time occurrence. And be sure to take the task away once you find the processor.

-In the closet at your Aunt and Uncles house it's frustrating getting the "<Being a brilliant scientist..." dialog every step.

Okay, that's it for now. Keep up the great work!
