    • Help Making NPC Templates

I'm fairly new at this, and I think I may be missing a step when I try and save a NPC as a template. I'm running Coldstone in Classic out of system 10.2, and when I try to save a NPC as a template, I get the following error message:
An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • NilObjectException means that CGE(the program/app) has called for a resource that has not been created yet, or the code refers/alludes to something that does not exist.

Curious, you're using ClassicCGE under ClassicMode on OSX? or Carbon CGE under Classic? either of these situation seems problematic.

In short you can do nothing about this, it isn't your fault...

      AND

If you still need a template, you can always save a 'dummy' copy of the NPC yourself, keep it in a separate folder, duplicate it as necessary...the CGE environment only emulates the Finder process and about .75 percent as useful and about 200% buggier/unreliable...(visit Glenn 's page O' bugs for more details)...

    • EBF07 - I feel like I've heard of this problem before, but a quick search of the board didn't bring anything up. Sorry to say, I don't know what's causing it or how to cure it, but for what it's worth, running Coldstone natively on OS X 10.2.4, I just tried and was able to successfully create an NPC template without crashing. Is there a particular reason why you're running Coldstone in Classic?

Thanks for the plug, but I must in fairness note that I haven't found time to update the page in months. All the bugs listed there still exist, unfortunately, but the list is nowhere near complete. (FYI, the URL is http://homepage.mac....dstoneBugs.html if you want to take a look anyway.)

Out of curiosity, just how much time do you save by leaving out the "ro le" in the word "problem"?

      I don't know what I'm talking about.
Oh no, here comes another learning experience.

    • I don't use templates at all. As Glenn said, just create an NPC and then reopen it, change the specs, and saveas.

Lots of good people (like Stark, Glenn, Stray, Win, dampeoples and many others) on this board help people a great deal and have created tutorials, events, and graphics to further help people who are trying to build plug-ins and games. Since it's brought up here on this thread, I'd like to thank everyone who's been so helpful here. Very much appreciated!!

    • Thanks for all of the replies. I'll try making a template with it running on OSX, I've just been using the classic because I like the interface better. I guess it poses some problems, though, so I'll have to get used to it in OSX. Thanks also for the hint about the saveas function. I'll probaly use that from now on, I was just hoping that maybe there would be some kind of wonderful, awe inspiring thing I could do with the templates. But what's another Coldstone quirk? It just gives the program character. Thanks again for all of your help.
