    • tile problems!

OK, I'm going to be as specific as possible in order to get this taken care of quickly, hopefully. I'm trying to get my game done by monday of next week, so there is much to do. Here we go:

I'm having a problem where in one of my maps everything but the tiles are showing up. I have the tile size setting at 32x32 - the tile images are 32x32 72dpi saved as pct at 16 bits. The map is a rather large 160x160. I've bumped up the ram to 200 MB in order to avoid problems (I will lower it when it's done to the size it really needs), but all I get is a black background that streaks my sprites when they walk over it. I tested these same tiles in the medievel tutorial and they showed up fine, so you can imagine that I'm a bit confused. I'm using coldstone v 1.0.1 on an imac 600mhz with 320MB ram running OS 9.2.1 - I think that just about covers the details.

Any help is always greatly appreciated!

    • Sorry to say, but it sounds to me like you're doing everything exactly right - I have no idea why you're having problems. Any chance you can upload the map and tiles in question somewhere so we can take a look at them?

      I don't know what I'm talking about.
Oh no, here comes another learning experience.

    • Klatu,

Check your color depth settings of your computer. Ie, make sure you are currently running in thousands or millions of colors.

The reason I say this is that I ran into an odd problem a while ago that acted similar to what you are experiencing. All my pictures were 16-bit and 72 dpi but they wouldn't show up correctly. They looked fine with CGE's picture viewer though.

I finally noticed that a stray application had changed my system settings to 256 colors and hadn't changed them back. I reset it to thousands(or millions, can't remember which) and had to go back into the map and resave it while in the higher color depth. Everything worked fine from then on.

Really, really odd but it is the only thing I can think of.

    • I tried several different monitor color depth configurations and nothing. I also played with the configs in coldstone, but still nothing. I'd hate to have to redo the map - it has a fare amount of work put into it. I also tried resizing the medievel tiles to see if they'll work in the map when set to 32x32, but I still got nothing, so I'm assuming it's not my images. Any other suggestions?

I might post up the map and it's images in order for you guys to test.

    • You might want to try replacing the location connected to this map; that should be relatively painless and might work.

    • I figured it out! Get this - I figured this might be it from my limited programing knowledge. I had a folder titled "grass/pssg/wtr" the and thought - maybe the backslashes are confusing the directory it's looking in, so I stuck the image in another folder and starting filling it in with the same images - and bam - there you go!

      The moral of this story:

DON'T USE BACKSLASHES IN FOLDER NAMES!

Thanks for helping me out! Now let's see if I can finish by monday - maybe, maybe not...
