Have you tried the plug-in tutorial?

the medieval one? Well I lied, I did design a map. I just think that a demo without any guide will frustrate anyone who tries to work with it and fails to understand.
It's supposed to be easy to use.

    • Even if only the registered version is going to include the "full tutorial", the demo definitely needs some sort of beginner's guide with it. As it currently stands, the user is given a message along the lines of "Here's the demo. Play with it and see if you can figure out how to use it; or, if you're willing to buy it now, we'll teach you how to use it so that you can decide (having already purchased it) whether it meets your needs or not." That's not at all friendly.

Frankly, Coldstone is a complex app. It's easy for the beta testers and developers to forget that (after all, we're quite familiar with it by now), but there definitely needs to be more guidance for the beginning user.

"A scientist can discover a new star, but he cannot make one. He would have to ask an engineer to do it for him."

    • All of the pieces seem pretty easy by themselves, but it's putting them together that's the hard part. I've got maps made (including layers & access).

I'm pretty certain I'm going to buy Coldstone, but I'd like to see if I can make even a simple project first. Please post the tutorial as a download. Thanks!

    • Ok -- I feel this may indeed be helpful.

I'll take it up with Andrew, but I certainly can't promise any results.

      Yes, thank you very much!

FYI, I just showed Coldstone off at my game developer club here at Michigan State. I let them see Cosmic Memory and PoG, to show some of the things you can do with it.

Unfortunately, when it came to Coldstone itself, I could only show them a few maps I made, and also the default build of the project with the town & dragon.

Most of them were pretty impressed, but most were also upset that it was a "mac only" app. On a good note, I did get two of them to volunteer with the project (one wants to make maps, and the other wants to do the music).

I think having something that I had actually put together would have made a better impression. I will definitely buy Coldstone once the tutorial is posted online for download.

    • Coldstone Mac only??? Since when? What about all those posts about the Windows version on the progress log???

      ------------------

    • Hrm -- I think the editor will end up being for both Mac and Windows, but I don't know how soon that will happen. In fact, I don't even know if the Windows version is still being worked on.

    • A downloadable tutorial would be a great idea.
But in the meantime, quit complaining and edit the medieval map. Just start replacing the graphics with your own, modify the events etc. play around.

    • The manual only shows how to create a very few things and absolutely nothing about how to implement them. Give me source and I can tear it apart and figure out how to manipulate it. What comes with the IDE so far asks us to re-invent the wheel.

    • For what it is worth, I would find a tutorial helpful -- but I understand there is a very nice one on the CD, correct? If so, fine! I've certainly seen more than enough in the downloadable package to let me know that ColdStone is certainly worth $49 to me! I'm anxious to get started, too -- but I'm willing to wait for the CD.

If a downloadable tutorial is to be provided, I'd recommend a very basic walk-through of the basic features, designed for beginners. This might make ColdStone a bit less intimidating for the absolute newbie.

    • I, too, would like to see a tutorial. I teach a class in which the final term project frequently is a game. I would like to implement Coldstone next term but I simply don't have the time to slug through the PDF to figure everything out before I decide whether to use it for the class.

For myself, however, I will be buying the registered version and am willing to eventually sift through the user manual but, alas, stuff for personal use is monumentally lower on the priority list.

    • I was going to say that Coldstone is pretty simple and easy to figure out, but then I recalled my brush with the events and realized that having a tutorial to help me get my bearings as far as those are concerned would be helpful.

I've been trying to make a movie play for like an hour now. I finally got the movie to play, but it's just superimposed on the conversation window and my fade-ins/outs don't seem inclined to work, nor do my music volume adjustments or, I suspect, my mouse control on/off changes (moving the mouse over the movie creates results that aren't pretty). I also had to add a stop button to the conversation window because the movie looped.

    • HEAR HEAR! I've diddled around with the software, but for the life of me, I can't even alter the existing "Mideval" game, much less create a new one from scratch... The documentation is scattershot, at best.

ATTENTION AMBROSIA SOFTWARE: If you want folks to use your software, create better documentation, or create a tutorial, either for sale or download. Otherwise, get ready to see your software fade into oblivion.
