    • pog chat room on IRC

      What is #pog?
      -------------

#pog is an IRC channel (see below if you don't know what IRC is) for discussing Ambrosia's game Pillars of Garendall -- and it's open to the general public. C'mon in and hang out -- talk about Pillars of Garendall with fellow journeymen, beta testers, and perhaps even the authors of the game.

Please respect each other in #pog -- let's keep the level of discussion at least somewhat civilized and productive. We've just put this channel together, so give it a little time to get up to speed.

How do I join in on the chat?
      -----------------------------

Set up your IRC client (see below if you do not have an IRC client) to join the private Ambrosia server:

      irc.ambrosia.net

(because this is our own server, we will not be affected by net splits, lag, and other such nonsense)

Once you are connected to the IRC server, join #pog by whatever means your client provides (for Ircle, it's a menu item), or type:

      /join #pog

      What is IRC?
      ------------

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat; it's a rather geeky, archaic system of chat (similar to AOL's chat room), but it works fairly well, and is accessible by anyone around the world.

In order to chat on IRC, you'll need a client. Some popular Mac clients are:

      Snak -- (url="http://"http://www.snak.com/")http://www.snak.com/(/url) (shareware)
      Ircle -- (url="http://"http://www.ircle.com/")http://www.ircle.com/(/url) (shareware)
      ShadowIRC -- (url="http://"http://www.shadowirc.com/")http://www.shadowirc.com/(/url) (free)
MacIRC -- (url="http://"http://www.macirc.com/")http://www.macirc.com/(/url) (free, but unsupported)

I'm sure there are others; Ircle is by far the most popular Mac IRC client, however it isn't free, and it will eventually stop working if you don't pay for it (it's well worth it).

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

    • Could we get a Hotline server going? The protocal is 10x better than IRC, and there are tons of bots, and other related things available.

      mac carbon
      mac classic
      windows
      linux

And probably a few other ones that I forgot.. like Java
      😛

    • With the experience of someone who has been using the internet for about ten years now, I beg to differ. IRC, while only marginally more complicated than Hotline to the average user, is quite a bit more flexible. There are also multiple clients, so if you don't like one particular client, you can find a better one. And, as a final note, I haven't yet seen a single irc client that displays any annoying ad banners.

Then don't use the standard HL client. In my opinion I find IRC to be better as a chatroom and I find HL to be better as a file server with needed chat capabilities and news.

IRC for chat... HL for a file server/minimal chat...

    • Since there already is the IRC server for the chat/news, and an FTP server for the files, then why should andrew bother with a hotline server? It'll only take up more CPU power and memory.

And on a side note, it doesn't work to ask 'when will Coldstone be released?' in #pog, unless you want to see something other than a release date response. 🙂

    • Hey, thanks a bunch andrew. Been looking for a list like that for a long time now. Also for allowing there to be a chatroom about coldstone.
