    • Believe it or not, I found out about Coldstone fairly recently and am just now coming out with story ideas. I think it would be a nice idea to do a samurai epic, (not many people seem to want to do much besides standard swords and sorcery fare), but here's the problem: I love being able to change classes! Now if it's increadibly hard to do that in Coldstone it will make my decision easier, but I'm gonna just ask some advice here. As I said earlier I want a job (class) change system similar to that in Final Fantasy Tactics, which is outlined in the second post in this topic. However...In a Samurai epic, what's my guy gonna be besides a samurai? Could any experts on the topic help me out here? Maybe I could just make it set in feudal Japan but just have my main homey G leave the whole samurai thing and be free to learn new types of skills, maybe add a theif thing. Or should I give up on the whole Samurai thing? Lay some advice on me, I'm starved for attention!

    • ok slacker, I know something.. my brother is reading "Shogun" and if he were awake right now I'd ask him.
Well whatever you do DON'T PUT NINJAS IN IT. Ninjas never existed under that name, if they existed at all. Ninjas are a racist term for Samurai, although people often picture ninjas as guys in tight fitting black clothes with long swords with little of that hilt thingy on most swords ::::: :frown:)=============> yeah kinda lame but those 2 parentheses () are what I call the "hilt" because I don't know any other word for it.
Alrighty I'm pretty sure you know what the armor looks like(did you know that samurai armor was what inspired george lucas or whoever to add darth vader's armor that way, without the black plastic of course). Um.. the swords they usually used were called Kill Swords(2 handed) but they might also use a short sword.
Well for class ideas, um.... Assassin(NOT NINJA!), Merchant(HA yeah right), Samurai(the main "fighter") or if you want to fly in the face of historical facts just add something called a Sage and have it cast spells, now that would be interesting.
As you can tell, I'm a mage to the core in RPG's.

    • FWIW,

in my game your character is a follower of an order somewhat similar to mythical Taoism, somewhat of a combo of a nature wizard and martial arts expert. Watch some Hong-Kong action films to get an idea... heck even Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (excellent film, BTW), has some of these elements.

But here's the twist: While these types were somewhat respected in ancient Chinese myth, I'm dropping this into a dark-aged period where fear is king and people are persecuted for being associated with your order, much similar to the Salem Witch trials.

Add in a bit of Cthulu mythos, sprinkle in a pinch of Kafka, and a touch of David Koresh... it's like cooking!

    • That sounds damn good sanehatter me old fruit. I love martial arts, I do Ju Jitsu, and any computer game with martial arts in it sounds dope to me.

    • My main character begins as a basic warrior, and he remains a warrior for the rest of the game, to some capacity or another, he may end up at the end as a fighter variant, like ranger or paladin, but he never leave the fighter type classes. Indeed my story makes spellcasters secondary to warriors and fighters. My game world is a rough and tumble kind of place, and every man must have both his sword and wits equipped to survive, in contrast, spellcasters are look down upon as weak and ineffective (even though they may posess great power).

    • In my game you get a choice, but you have to be a man because it would just be too drawn out and complicated to add love interests and no, I'm sorry.
Like I said earlier I'll have Battle Lord which branches off into a bandit, Battle Mage, and Paladin.
Then I'll have Priest of Zentau which can become a Cleric, a Druid, or a War Priest.
I'll have a Sorcerer which becomes a Changeling, Chanter, Channeler, or Warlock.
And last but not least I'll have the Brigand, which becomes a thief like character, an archer(ranger), or a Rogue, which is a thief with limited magical abilities.
You can choose between those 4 groups, you could be a Priest of Zentau instead of becoming one of the priest's other choices and you'd have a little bit of power from each.
Be sure to be original with your character class ideas, because everyone is tired of Wizard, Thief, and Warrior, even if it is classic

    • Ok let's not toss this whole thread out, come on someone!
      Add to this discussion!

    • now maybe your questions about class ideas are answered here

    • There's not really that much left to discuss...
Maybe this topic should be locked...

    • No real choosable classes in my game. On the other hand, if possible, I want an experience system that keeps track of XP per ability, so if the main character uses magic alot, (s)he will end up as a sort of a mage, or if (s)he focusses on fighting, then (s)he will end up with more powerful physical attacks, defenses, etc.

    • Yeah I totally redesigned mine, and you can choose what path to follow, but not really a specific class. Like if you focus more on magic than strength you end up as a mage, like you mentioned above. You get other characters with set classes that help you out, they can't be customized by you except items I think.
Can we add NPC's that join your party?

      ------------------
"I did not choose my role, and I suspect Gerrard did not either"

    • well with the NPC question unanswered it sort of leaves my game stuck in a ditch somewhere.
Well I want to say that the game in the screenshots revolves around choosing your class, I mean they have things that add skills or items at certain levels, spells, etc.
So we do know that you can modify character classes.
      What are some ideas?
      -Monk
      -Pirate
      -Wanderer
      -Rogue
      -Summoner
      -Avatar
      -Macabre Mage
      -Falcon
etc.. there are many strange character classes out there, can anyone think of some?

"Oh....Talia is it? What a....a pleasant surprise. I did not expect---"
"Neither did your guards--- judging by the look of shock pasted on their lifeless faces"

    • my classes are:
      cute girl
      skimppy girl
      porn girl
      stripper
      prostitute
      hero

      ------------------
      dead

    • how.. um.. interesting.
I guess you're making an "adult" game then.

    • hey, pirates! there's a class I haven't seen in a while. now what I want to see is someone making a Monkey Island RPG. Somehow though, I have a feeling seeing Guybrush from the top down would detract from the humor of the whole experiance. oh well.
