    • Questions 'bout Battle Systems and Mac/PC compatability. . .

'ey. . .this is Spart. . .a newbie to this board. . .
-Mkay- I got a couple questions:

Sorry if someone already answered these in another post, I didn't check. . .

In the battle on the COLDSTONE engine will there be combo's? I was wonderin' 'cause I was interested in making a DragonBall Z RPG and I wanted to know what kind of Battle system I can plan for. . .

I'm also plannin' a Calvin and Hobbes RPG (I love the idea of that) You can play as Calvin, Spaceman Spiff. . .Stupendous Man. . .you can summon dinosaurs through Calivn's imagination, I was thinkin' of callin' it "The Spaggetti Incident" (SP)
Well. . .I told friends about it and they were very interested in the game. . .And I need to know this: Will the games made with the Coldstone Editor be playable on both Mac/PC platforms or is it only the editor that will be multiplatform. . .

Okay thats all for now. . .see you around. ..

    • Good luck with the "legal issues" of making a Calvin and Hobbes game.

    • The Legal issues eh?. . .Yeah, I know Watterson is kind of stuck on the un-commercial thing. . but, there really are no legal issues with Me makin' a non-profit Calvin and Hobbes game.

I mean, I'm not takin' away from any of Watterson's profits, and I myself am not makin' any profits. . .there is no problem. . .

    • OK, now I'm no copyright lawyer but as I understand it, unless used in parady, the author of the work owns the copyright to his/her written or visual works for a certain period of years. That means unless you have the author's permission to use the images of Calvin, Hobbes, Suzie etc in a game you can't legally do it. Regardless of the profit factor.

As an artist, I can't use, say, a recognizable portion of an Andy Warhol work in my pieces without permission from his estate. A very small/unrecognizable or "significantly altered" portion yes, but otherwise no.

The same way I won't use a tileset from Fantasoft or Spiderweb software in my CGE game.

That being said, it's still a fun idea. Calvin and Hobbes was my favourite comic of all time. Only Bloom County came close.

(I may be completely wrong on all this, ask a lawyer for certain.)

    • I understand what your sayin'. . .Bill Watterson can get me on copywrite charges, however. . he has no reason to. . .I'm sure he'd be pleased to see his work come to a new medium(hopefully) OR maybe he will never here of it(fat chance that my game will get big). Oh yeah, and in no way am trying to replace what he had. . .I'm only expanding on it.

    • Ok what I gathered from the screenshot thingies and the info below them and the faq is that you can only run the editor on mac, but games can be played on PC, I don't know if this is true because they even had a screenshot of the editor on the pc.

"Do you expect me to talk?"
"Why no Mr. Bond! I expect you to die!"

    • Games can be compiled to run on both Windows and Mac. As to whether the editor is for both Windows and Mac, it isn't decided. It's my personal belief the Windows editor will be a reality.

    • Bill Waterson has gone on record as saying that the only people who have profited off of C&H; merchandise are thieves. While he was referring to people who made stickers, plush dolls, etc, of the characters, a game based on his creations could be well be construed as merchandise, and even if the game is freeware, your reputation would be profiting off of it.

The only way to avoid the "profit" factor (and consequently the legal issues) would be to do an anonymous release. You don't want to do that, trust me, I know, I've done some guerilla political art before and it sucks having done something cool, something that makes the news, something that really makes (some) people wish the laws were a little different, something that could really enhance your reputation if only you could take credit for it, but you can't for fear of the law.

If you're going to spend the time required to make a quality game, you want to be able to take some credit for it. Besides, one general problem with licensed games in general is that they hardly ever live up to our expectations.

Now please, let's get back on topic.

My, what short attention spans and points of focus we have...

I was also wondering if you could employ a combo system as in 'Legends Of LeGaia',
      or something of that nature.
