    • New name for Coldstone?


      First of all, does anyone think that Coldstone should have a different name when it is finally released? I realize it's named after the RPG that Beenox developed once, but it's not a very descriptive name for a game authoring system. Something similar to "world builder" or "adventure creator"; maybe "Odyssey Engine" or something along those lines. "QuestMaker"? Just a suggestion.

      I would also like to know what 3D program the Beenox folks are using to make the demo game.

    • Besides, you couldn't use "Odyssey Engine". No matter how cool it sounds, the game "Odyssey" was an RPG circa 1994. I own a copy :D. Pretty good game, not bad graphics for its era, and a pretty good plot. If anyone wants a copy, it's probably legal now, so just tell me. 😉

      Oh, and "World Builder" is even older. It was an RPG maker from around 1992. It made B+W graphics, and it acted a lot like a hypercard stack. It still opens on my G4, but it crashes, so if I want to use it I have to open it on my Classic. Once again, if you want a copy, tell me.

      'World Builder' was the first commercial version of what later became 'Supercard'. It was first released in the pre- Mac II days. (1986 ish). I like 'Coldstone'... It has a certain 'sculpt me' feel.

    • Talos hit me with that odyssey it sounds like it might be fun to play with, I think I'll create a "Frankenstein"(parts and pieces) while I wait for the release.

    • Yes, I have World Builder and am a big fan of it (and I don't think it was any kind of predecessor to SuperCard, which came from HyperCard and that's a completely different animal). If Coldstone were to have the ability to make World Builder-type games, I would be very happy indeed. Unfortunately, those games look very low-tech today and I don't think it would be a great selling point - "you can make games just like they did in 1985!" Still, for anyone who hasn't tried WorldBuilder, it's available for download from C/net, it's free and if you have an old Mac, it's really fun to use. Text in one window, graphics in another and you can interface with a game by typing commands or clicking on graphics - what more could one wish for?

      You mean you're building in a text parser? Or that it would be possible to make one from scratch? The old beta version that I'm familiar with didn't seem to allow for this. Also, World Builder allowed you to layer sprites on top of your backgrounds; you could put a pile of coins on the floor and when the player clicks on the coins they disappear as they're moved into the inventory. As I recall, the mouse navigation interface in Coldstone allows you to select areas of an image to be clickable like an image map on a web page, but it doesn't let you make objects appear or disappear in the way I mentioned above.
