    • Umm.. can you delete levels and replace them Edwards?

    • I'd just like to point out that I've uploaded a set of OnePage maps to the add-ons page, which you can find here. I'm not entering them in the contest (in part because one of them cheats), but I figured that you might be interested in how the guy who invented the format uses it.

@FireFalcon: No, you may not replace an entry. However, you can have up to three entries (and updates to an existing map don't count, as long as the map is identifiably the same), of which you seem to have only used one.

      I really liked them.

Perhaps you could make the player spawn on a Boss Start trigger or something, so that the boss healthbar is shown? You might have left that out deliberately, though.

So, uh, Edwards...how far along is your big project, eh? j/k

    • What, what? What's this about a project? Do my old ears pick up the hint of a level in progress? ^_^ I hope it's not far from release, another level is needed right about now while people are waiting for TTOTP and my own Cathedral Of Chaos which are both still in production.

    • Sorry, both of you. I have nothing even close to completion, although I may try to get The Ocean into some sort of working order before starting in on The Frozen North (for a measure of completion, I have the walls about 50% done, and one of the three bosses complete except for the non-boss support critters).

@---: I thought about it, but it would have made the level even harder, as the boss would never have left culling distance. Also, I was having some lag problems that allowed the upper GunBugs to escape their enclosures, and as boss fights are detrimental to the framerate (albeit not very much at this scale), I ended up deciding against putting the boss trigger in. Basically, once you've opened fire on the boss, there's no point in retreating, and thus little point in having a health meter- either you kill it or it kills you. Any retreat would make you even more vulnerable to flying munitions.

    • Can I post a level here that I people to beta test for me? I don't want the level to enter the contest now, I want to submit later. It probably has bugs but I want people's opinions. is that legal. (For the contest rules)

    • I'd prefer it if you posted it in a separate thread, to avoid cluttering this thread up with beta versions, but yes, you are allowed to do that.

Few little niggles with your levels - well, apart from the ice one which was great fun 🙂

The flicker-tree - you hinted in the readme that the water might be a good move, but all you have to do (I found) was simply shoot where you started (possibly with very small left-right movements) and you can kill the whole flicker nest without getting scratched (or maybe getting hit by one). Then (after enjoying the carnage) I noticed that you'd given the wave gun too - was that a mistake?

The Master turret - that was cool. On my third go I practically beat it - I got him, but his last (big) bullet got me before the win dialogue could come up.... Then it took me about 10 tries to manage to do it again! 😕 Issues though were that:

(minor) it's very difficult to hide in the little enclosures since you get repelled by the walls and bounce out again - hence it seems easier to just charge it.

The boss actually gets culled if you are at the bottom of the screen (and hence presumably the top too!)

The couple of oddities this produced were:
      - when I was getting chased by one of his (ice-)missiles close to the bottom of the screen and then it blinked out and reappeared half-way up the screen and then vanished for good as the boss culled!
      - bugs can get trapped inside him if they enter where part of him that has been culled is and then you move back into non-culling distance again.
      - missiles and bugs seem to be able to get through the walls to the little hidey-holes from the outside. Actually the bugs can't usually get right through - but can get far enough through to be able to shoot you.
      - the fact that it gets culled at all reduces the difficulty 😞

That said, the map definitely ranks as the most ridiculous boss arena I've yet played - great fun. 🙂

...and from performing a post-mortem dissection on it, very well designed - bet you enjoyed putting him together 😉

Yes, I noticed after I uploaded it that it was much easier than I had originally intended. Perhaps if I doubled the HP of the flickers you'd be forced to dive for the water?

Argh! A bit of a debug feature that snuck in, that.

Third try? Nice! It should be less likely to do that in 1.0.1, as sprite grandchildren will then deactivate when the grandparent dies.

Deliberate- in the original version, there were no hiding spaces at all. Then I added the movement, and decided that putting a couple of boxes in the bottom of the map would add to the interest value of the map.

Deliberate, but if it's really possible to beat it in only a couple dozen tries, I don't see why I shouldn't increase the difficulty. :ninja:

That appears to be a bug with Ice Missiles, although I personally have only experienced it in ---'s Colour Caves. I don't think I can do anything about it.

They can get trapped inside even if he doesn't leave culling distance- there was one incident before I removed the infinite shields debug feature where I got inside the box, and watched as nearly every critter in the level got pushed inside- I think that Enemy-type walls are slightly more permeable than the solid walls of the level edge, so if a critter gets smashed between the two, it ends up inside.

Sounds like the old framerate/collision bug, which is triggered here by the large number of shots flying around in the level.

    • Yes, I'd like to point out that most of the levels posted on for the contest have the wave, as it was included in the original template. So people might wanna update their levels, (I noticed this problem but fixed it before I posted any maps) hehe... ^_^

      Huzzah!

    • Ladies and gentlemen, please give a big warm welcome to the latest entrant to the contest: Shooting Gallery!

Do you like the way super pellets bounce off the walls? Do you like shooting arbitrary inanimate objects? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then this map is for you!

If I could sum this map up in a phrase, it would be: "A physical sheet of paper looks bigger than the One Page template actually is."

This will be my last entry. I had another one planned, but midterms have officially killed it. This map took too long.

(I'm mostly telling you this to keep myself from making one anyway instead of studying. :p)

    • Cheleball, you've outdone yourself again! (and most everyone else for that matter) within half a minute of playing Shooting Gallery quickly became my favorite contest level! Not only does it bring great enjoyment shooting everything in sight with the bouncy pellets, but it also provides quite a challenge. Indeed, the first go took me all of eight minutes to clear! (though a considerable amount of that time went to figuring out how to dispose of the grey boxes, until I noticed I had missiles. I noticed that the frame rate wasn't particularly good when you're standing in the centre of the level, but when I got engrossed into the game play I paid it no attention. This seems to be a level that you could play repeatedly and still find pleasure in doing so.

By the way, what's the tiny bug that flashes green near the green Homing switch for?

    • Great level! deffinatley my favorite so far. I almost beat it in 6 minutes but i ran out of rockets on the last box.

Best way to get the box down the long straight section is to just tocket-ram it through the wall 😉

    • I found it too easy to beat. When the frame-rate started lagging I was able to shoot through walls. I give three out of five stars.

    • Why didn't i think of that? So what was the skf master (crono's) time?

I think that's a little unfair to blame the map for the fact that the game's engine is currently somewhat lacking in terms of polish... 😉

    • Thanks all for the comments.

Re: The Framerate: This was something I didn't anticipate. It's likely due to the super force fields used to keep the player's ship in the passages. It's probably also due to the large number of sprites used; (almost) every line you see is backed by an invisible wall. However, I didn't notice any slowdown while testing until I added the force fields.

Unfortunately, I don't see any way to improve it.

Re: The Bug is an "enemy magnet." It attracts the homing bullets so they (mostly) arc towards the switch.

Re: The Rocket Ram: Shh! You weren't supposed to notice that! 😄 There was supposed to be a space to prevent that from happening, but I ran out of room because, again, it's easy to overplan on a piece of paper. Maybe I could shift the box to the right so a proximity detonation still sets it off, but it can't be missiled through the wall?

Re: Best time: 3:34. Oh, you weren't talking to me? Sorry. 😛
