    • Where's My Dawgs At?

      6 10 5013

      Just seeing who's on the board of the Pop.

    • I am, and waiting for the new influx of poppers. ^_^

      What? Are you just waiting to pop someone's --

      ...

      Oh, nevermind. It wasn't that funny, anyway.

    • I am here, and am not. I noticed this topic as it showed up as a new newest posted topic in the main board listing, but otherwise I'm not really a regular of this board. I do own Pop-pop, and have played quite a bit of puzzle, vs CPU, and single-comp 2P play (not LAN, though, only one copy). However (and it's why I'm not really a denizen of this place), since I'm stuck with an Intel Mac (one that's not overpowered enough to make the game playable) I've not played it recently, and more importantly my Internet access prevents me from playing any game whatsoever over the net, which is quite a hampering at Pop-pop socialisation.

    • I log in occasionally, but usually I have better things to do these days than hang around on a tracker that nobody frequents any more -_-

      One fine day I might even upgrade to an intel mac, and by the sound of it, that will signal the final death knell for me too...

      I think the things which really did for this game were:

      • The network game timeout for novices - IMHO, way too OTT - only a single game without disconnect and limited pop selection was fine, but timed too was a really lame idea. Especially annoying for those like me who who had taken the trouble to register and still got timed out when trying to play (and frequently in my case) train up new talent.

      • Flakiness of the tracker - it seemed that whenever we wanted to organise tournaments for those who wanted to play (and again to attract new talent) the tracker would go down.

      • Lack of communication in the network - made it difficulty to organise tournaments etc

      • Mouse issues - this may have only been me, but my MS IntelliMouse (3.0 explorer, the silver-grey) mouse would frequently become unrecognised by the game for purposes of paddle control (cursor control in chat etc worked fine), but when the net-game started, the paddle wouldn't move. It only ever happened when I back-grounded the game, and leaving and re-entering the network lounge always fixed the issue, but this meant dropping the connected game and re-hosting which seemed rude. --; I suppose as a bonus of this, I got at playing with my laptop's trackpad ^~

      I would have the following suggestions for a 2.0 verison of this game if it were ever made:

      - Make it intel native (of course! ^_^)

      - Fix at least the top two issues above, and preferably the third

      - make it bigger than 800x600xthousands - it was a tiny letter-box play-area for me (I didn't like full screen mode, and it was a pain when two-timing PhotoShop to play, to have the screen drop to 1000's of colours).

      ::bows out::

      Ryoko, would it be possible that you, by any (bad) luck, have missed what caused this topic to be posted in the first place? That sounds likely.

      Pedro-san, I did put (of course ^^) after my comment, ne? ^~

      but I'm sorry for giving the wrong impression - I was talking about a new version, not just an native port of the current one. I personally think (hai, hai, pessimist that I am) that just a native port will not be really worth while. Nobody seems to play these days, and the pop-pop community that there was seems to have dispersed. You can't blame people - after all, there are Xbox's, Wii's and PS3's out nowadays, and there are precious few people I meet at work who are into games anyway (I'm not really either, for that matter). Out of those who are, there seem to be fewer people still who would consider investing the time and energy into excelling in a single version.

      Perhaps the most depressing example is my experience at playing pop-pop newbies who just kept accusing me of cheating when I cleared on them. -_-

      ::sad sigh::

    • Pedro-san I like the sound of it. 😉

      What made me think that you didn't know, was more the mention of a future Intel Mac and what you think could be the consequence; I mean, this is showing an obvious lack of faith in rudy! He can do it by the time you get an Intel Mac! Provided, of course, he's not too bothered by his gazillion other programs to maintain, not too distracted by silly IRC conversations, by his fellow Ambrosia employees, not too slowed down by stupid code which broke in the meantime of a few OSX updates and different byte order, etc But these things are obviously minor and the probability they will slow down our awesome rudy is negligible. 😉

      ::laughs:: ^^; gomen-ne - I'm not a techy I'm afraid, and don't really understand all the nuances of most of that... but... ^^;; I'm sure he will do a good job, and hope he forgives my impertinence - gomen-nasi! ^_^;; Is there any hint of whether ambrosia will charge for the upgrade?

      I also got to play someone yesterday - a certain 'lemon jelly' (yummy!) - last night! Even won some of the games, which I was very happy about, given how long it is since I have played! It made me remember about another feature wish - to be able to configure the net game to not drop any power-ups/downs. They used to drive me up the wall back in the days when I took it all far too seriously. -_-

    • Well it's early maintenance on WoW and I thought I'd install a couple of games I noticed I hadn't on this intel mac mini ... including this one. I was a bit surprised to see that performance was awful and thought I'd pay this place a visit. Even this thread had fallen off the default list 😞 but I was pleased to see that the last updated date on the universal binary progress log was only a few weeks ago ... sounds like progress to me :)!
