    • reclaiming Mini-T!

      7 12 279

      In the tournament before last, I made the unfortunate social gaffe of picking Mini-T for one match, and man did I feel bad when I found out that that was going against all our pop-pop traditions (in my defense, it was my first tournament...). Then yesterday I was a little surprised when Cougar picked Mini-T for a match against me (he beat me good, too!).

      Well I think it's time to remove this stigma surrounding our poor neglected purple friend! In the tournament yesterday, every single person I played used bombs; that gets kind of boring! Does anyone else think it would be fun to develop more nuanced styles of play? 😉

      Of course, there's also the question of politeness: Lumisa graciously thanked SHOES for not picking a pop he knew she didn't like. But on the other hand, those of us not blessed with SHOES' phenomenal skills sometimes need all the help we can get! And the fun of games is, we can feel free to compete seriously and even bitterly to win, while still not caring tremendously about the outcome: cause really there isn't much consequence to winning or losing in pop-pop (Cave Dig excepted, of course!). Texas Girl found out that I stink against a well-used Ducky, so how can I object if she then chooses to use him against me?! All I can do is practice, and try and figure out what I'm doing wrong.

      I remember that in the early days of pop-pop the biggest complaint was about bomb spammers; now we're all bomb spammers, but the difference is that we've largely learned to cope with bombs, and only the largest attacks in conjunction with all sorts of other misfortune can have any effect. If we played against Mini-T for just a bit I think the same would come to be true of his wind.

      Of course, I won't unilaterally start using Mini-T against people; that would be rude! But I welcome anyone (alright, not anyone... but most folks ;)) to use him against me; and then I'll do likewise. And then, only then, will all the pops be truly equal! 😄

    • IMHO was mini-t not as bad as claimed before the update and now after the update (1.0.2) mini-t has lost so much that he is not dangerous anymore at least not more dangerous than any other pop. I am with Danny that the tradition of not using mini-t is outdated. And there is no rule (up to now) which pops are allowed and which not...

      Agreed.

    • Also agreed, ^_^

      I personally (and I know Crono agrees somewhat with me, though perhaps not with as much feeling, Crono ne? ^_~) that bombastic is the most irratating pop (maybe followed at a distance by tex).

      This is because you can be struggling at the bottom (or near the bottom) and be having one of those (frequent) evening's where the game's idea of fun is to see just how many downer's it can keep on the screen in yur paddle area at one time.

      As an aside - Do you ever notice how all puzzle games seen to evolve this sense of irony? o_O E.g. Tetris never gives you that long one you've been wanting... ^_^;;;

      Back on track... for all the other pops, you can cling grimly on with the magnet, and even use side to get the bricks while dealing with the pop's special move. For bombastic not so - you HAVE to catch the bombs - which involves moving the paddle - and there's no way you can do so, because your paddle area is a red mess of down arrows that just won't go away. Result is that not even a spam, but just a single bomb drop will kill you and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

      I'm not normally one for bitching too much about the game when it's feeling funny like that - after all, it's equally funny to everyone on occasion, and we all develop our ways of dodging that v-lock or pair of double downers ^~. However when it's doing it and the other person is bombastic, that really gets on my nerves. ><*

      I would never say playing bombastic is dull - it's usually a very good game - but when the game's random number genereator gets stuck on the power-downs, (and I'm tired and ought to be asleep anyway), then 'force death' is just irratating. All the more so because your opponant can't see your screen (or rather, the power downs loitering about on it) and hence doesn't realise just how annoying it is.

      You will never catch me using bombastic ^~ -but to get back to your earlier point about who likes what - I used to like using Ioni best (just cos she's the token girl ^~), which I found a surprsing number of people don't like - saying they find Ioni irrating! ^_^;

      I agree that it is who you are used to dealing with - I can deal with most of the pop's since Crono spammed me good and proper with the lot when he was teaching me (domo arigato, Crono-san) - but just because someone isn't using Mr Man or Bombastic shouldn't be a reason to discredit them "oh I hate <x>". It just shows that it is time you altered your game a bit to deal with a different opponant and also the different mindset of the player behind that opponant.

      Ryoko's thought for the day
      ^_^

    • Mini-t is, in some people minds, the only pop that you can't do anything about. They find that annoying. But that's the purpose.

    • Perhaps if in an update the speed of the bombs was slowed, it would balance Bombastic out with some of the other charaters?

    • SCREW YOU ALL! Mini-T sucks! I hope he rots. I have personally never lost to him. So there. ha.

      I personally didn't like Mini-T and I was glad to see his powers cut down a lot. He had too much kick for the money. The other pops, like Zap, to get lots of zaps on the screen, it will cost you!

      As for Windows Sucks, I know it may be tempting to say what you think (even if I think the same thing-- ) but we have to try and play a little nice 😉

      Bombastic is balanced. All the pops are balanced, roughly. People are just more used to dealing with some of them, and also don't realize that their strategies--both defending and attacking--need to be different with the different characters.

      The real problem comes when people spam with attacks.

      Naw... it's all part of the game! 😄 How can you complain about people trying to win, considering there's no penalty for losing? That's what I like about playing games: within the game it's perfectly acceptable to do everything you can to win, but once the game's over no one needs to have any hard feelings about the way things went. Of course, there's such a thing as politeness; I'd never spam someone hosting an 'N' game, and people I never played before I don't spam unless they do so first; but during tournaments all that should go out the window. In fact, it seems to me that in a tournament it's impolite not to go all out to win: if you don't, you're dissing your opponent.

    • I think it may be relevant to point out that bombarding doesn't work with Mini-t.
