    • Chatting in the Lounge

      11 25 452

      I have a feature suggestion:

Chatting in the Lounge. It would be quite useful. If you see someone you know there, you can spark up a chat with them, and invite them to a game of pop-pop. Just a suggestion.

    • Sounds like a good idea. It would become a whorehouse for AOLspeek, spam, and flaming insults, but I guess that can't be helped.

    • That was brought up during testing, and the response was - use GameRanger or IRC to chat.

      ------------------

    • ah, but there are things such as filters to fix this!

They are both easily downloaded, so it is the point.

    • it would be much easier to chat on pops own software, than to swtich apps, watch the screen flicker, say "haha", swtich back, watch the screen flicker again, and find a game on the tracker.... and GameRanger 3 has also become bloated, and may take some one on a dialup connex 20 mins to DL it.

many people ive played games with on the tracker agree this should happen. i dont see why it didnt..

Just to be clear - I agree with your opinion - but in reality it was more important to get the game finished and out the door than to add another layer into it.

The alternatives are there. Use them - don't use them. Up to you.

      ------------------

    • i totally agree with you on the release thing. but still, it would have been nice. is ASW considering putting it in an update? just wonderin if the idea is still flying around.

yeah, the alternative suck though. heh. but ill live.

Me, and many other people who use OS9, don't have the choice of using IRC. pop-pop cuts other processes out when you are playing a game, so I ping out of IRC as soon as I play a game - not the best environment for chatting.

    • If you don't have a chat feature, I would like to request a simplified version:

      "Invite Player"

Say you saw a guy you want to play. you can click on his name, click the button, and if he responds with a yes, you automagically host a new game. Now I know you could just host a game saying "Want to play, Willy?", (name chosen at random). But I think my way is much simpler.

I think it is pretty safe to say that all features we see now in pop-pop are the features that we are ever going to see. I may be wrong, but that is my impression..

It didn't happen because we don't think it is a good idea. pop-pop is not an irc client, a Hotline server, or GameRanger. If you want any of those, by all means, download one and use it.

yep, that feature used to be in pop-pop actually, and I liked it quite a bit, but there were technical issues with it, and we had to ship the game, so it was axed.

Well, yes, I realize this. But it is not like pop-pop doesn't have any chat features. You can chat before (Well after joining a game, at the pop select screen), at any time during, and after a game. But you can't chat in the lounge... I guess instead of a public chatting area (If you think it would be a bad idea), it would be nice to privately chat with another player in the lounge, and/or invite them to a game (Possibly with a message...?). Just my thoughts.

Any chance of it being re-introduced, or is it a dead issue?

Does it? I'm in 8.6 and seem to stay connected fine. Although, I do play in window mode.

(This message has been edited by benightedbastard (edited 07-23-2002).)

    • i tried window mode, but it KILLS my fps (down from 80s to 20s on a G3/233)

and the fact that you say "use GR"...when i was told that pop-pop had GR support, i was enthusiastic. the fact that GR doesn't show games on the pop-pop tracker was disappointing though. I thought it would be able to list the tracker similar to how it lists quake games. With only 1-2 games (if you're lucky) on GR, the tracker is the only option.

      ------------------

    • I'm on a G3/233, too. I don't consider 20fps to be that terrible. Definitely playable.

      Use:

      AIM
      ICQ
      GameRanger
      irc
      Hotline

Having an integrated irc client/server is beyond the scope of an arcade game like pop-pop.
