The scene: Mac World 2002, showroom floor, 40 feet away from the Ambrosia booth at a row of G4's, a one of which was loaded with pop-pop. Those present: myself, Captaintripps, Battledoctor, rudy, vindicare40k, and of course, Matt Walicke. For those of you not familiar with Matt, (url="http://"http://janus.ambrosiasw.com/~andrew/japan/poptokyo.jpg")this(/url) is him, in basically the same type of set-up as there was a Mac World NY. Matt did the software presentations for Ambrosia. A very funny guy all around. But what transpired next at Mac World was even funnier.
It was around 3pm on the second day of the show, and pop-pop was doing very well. Reaction was excellent, and many people were walking up and registering on the spot. Andrew was floating around the Ambrosia booth, and Matt Walicke was over by a G4 running pop-pop teaching a little girl how to play. He was coaching her as she played a game on the pop tracker with someone who we will refer to as 'Newbie', since his real identity should be protected.
The little girl obviously lost the first round of games with Newbie, and then Matt sat down. He began talking with Newbie on the tracker's chat protocol. I can't remember all of it, but as we all stood around laughing, it went something like this:
Newbie: I win
Matt: Hi, this is Matt Walicke from Ambrosia.
Newbie: it is
Newbie: do you have $15
Matt: pop-pop costs $25
Newbie: yah i know i only have 10 can you give me 15?
break for laughter among us
Matt: Would you like to play me for a pop-pop registration code?
Newbie: really?
Matt: Yep
Matt: Rules are:
Matt: If you beat me in the best of three games, you get a free registration code
Newbie: I did beat u
Matt: If I win, you have to register tonight
Matt: Deal?
Newbie: I alredy beat u
Matt: No, you beat a 7 year old girl.
At this point we were cracking up laughing and Matt was trying hard not to be sarcastic. They started a new game, where Newbie promptly disconnected due to having only a demo version. Matt hosted a game and Newbie joined again, ready to play.
Matt: So the bet still stands
Newbie: okay
Matt: Ready to play?
Newbie: ok
At this point, Matt slaughtered Newbie in three straight games, taking less than a minute and a half to win all three in a row.
Newbie: NO
Matt: So from whom can expect a registration tonight?
Newbie: I dont have money
Matt: A likely story
break for laughter among us again
Newbie: ok
Newbie: (name censored)
Matt: Alright, I'll be expecting your registration.
Matt: I have your ip logged.
Newbie: huh?
Newbie: dont hack me
Matt: hehehehehehehehe
break for insane cackling
Matt: I'll be watching for you.
Newbie: okay
Matt: Good game.
disconnect
Yes Newbie, wherever you are, I actually say Matt Walicke write down your name and ip, so if you didn't register as was part of the deal, you will be l33t haX0red. Or something.
At this point moki walked up to me and asked me why I stole his stress ball, which indeed I had in my hand the whole time. I returned it to him and Tripps and I went about our mac'in business.
And the moral of this story is: Don't make bets with Matt Walicke.
