    • I concur with Mag. The webpost pict shows up as a nice little error picture, and the dl'd pict is a blank white square.

    • The image does come up strange, Pallas, but looks great to me when you follow the link.

Anyways, at risk of appearing rather bad compared to the graphical expertise presented so far, my latest presentable piece can be found by following (url="http://"http://www.sangel.f2s.com/theprotectorate/incoming.html")this(/url) link.

    • Nice ship, Sundered Angel, but - at risk of my appearing like a total idiot - what exactly is it? I assume it's either a Standard or Light Cruiser.

    • Nah, looks more like a corvette or pickett ship of some sort.

    • Actually, it's a Tigermoth class Interceptor- a fighter. Note the oversized cockpit. Its bigger brother, the Vulture Assault Fighter, can be found (url="http://"http://www.sangel.f2s.com/theprotectorate/technicalview.html")here(/url).

    • That's a hella lotta wing, and a hella lotta engine for just one person to be flying around. Are you sure it is just a single-man fighter? It just appears to be something that is larger than a single-man interceptor yet still zippy enough to avoid fire from the larger ships that it is undoubtedly targeting with those big-ass guns.
Just my personal observations. What you say is of course correct.

And if that's an interceptor, it's "big brother" must be a beast.

    • I don't think the Smaller fighter had much wing to it - were you talking about the VAF?
The VAF does seem to have an excessive amount of unused space on it. If anyone intends on using it, it had better a) have a bunch of missiles under the wing or 🆒 be an atmospheric fighter.

"I fail to see the humor in that situation, Doctor."
"Naturally. You could hardly claim to be an angel with those pointed ears, Mister Spock. But say you landed someplace with a pitchfork "

    • You're right, I did goof. Now I see the difference. But the fighter is still pretty big for a fighter. Lots of wasted space.

Yes, the VAF does have a great deal of wasted space. The one benefit of wide wings though is that manuverability is increased laterally. With thrusters waaay out on the ends, you can spin around frighteningly quicky.

Too bad it's such a big target. :)d

    • The Tigermoth is the first space fighter ever to be mass produced, and the Vulture the second. As such, they're not extremely efficient designs- later fighters tend to be sleeker, more compact and more deadly.

By way of guns, the cannons on the wings of both vessels are anti-fighter weaponry, originally designed to pulverise makeshift pirate vessels in a couple of shots. Fighter to Fighter combat tends to be short and sweet- a Tigermoth can be destroyed in 5-6 blasts of its own lasers.

The Vulture does as a matter of fact carry six barrage missiles, so the wingspan isn't entirely wasted. Generally speaking, though, the bulky Vulture is at a serious disadvantage in a fight against any other fightercraft, as its missiles aren't designed to hit fast-moving targets, and it's easy to flank.

And yes, if I ever release a plug-in with these ships in it, you will get stuck having to fly the fragile Tigermoth and slow Vulture at some stage. 😉

    • Nice ship. I assume it's also used in atmospheric roles, as wings on a spacecraft don't do much.

    • Actually, they make good manouvring handles. The further the point of thrust is away from the axis of the ship, the more effect it will have.

I'm going to re-habilitate this contest, just so I can submit my latest pic. It hasn't been finished yet. But when it does fear ye. For it will have Special Effects™ and Be As A Ship Blowing UpŠ.

So, until then, I hope some of you take an interest in this competition again. Ah the memories. I wonder if Slug is still around? If he is, then I wonder whether he will see this topic and rejoin. But, heck, I don't think there's much point calling it a competition anymore. I don't think we'll ever have a winner.

So, I understand some of you have pitted your poor, woeful skills against your computers and have tried to create some graphics. Well, perhaps you should submit them. Think of it, the fame, the glory, the karma. Oh, I'm ranting...

And in case you're wondering, everything in "Testing" will be password encoded.

Not part of the contest. Just an adaption of my favourite lego fighter.

    • Lego fighters, eh? I discovered a nicely adaptable model many years ago; unfortunately it requires 2 pieces which are the only ones of their kind I have ever found. Built all sorts of useful features into it... maybe I should make it too, although in Strata, to save time.
