      Good thing I wasn't being sarcastic then. Maybe I should have written;

You might find a certain individual willing to help with that...

    • Still not used right. Maybe you should dig up some of Frandal's posts, the original user of the cryptic grin.

I may be willing to make ships for EVN:UGF. Depending on whether StarSword is interested and I have the time.

Actually, it was a nanite attack on his heart. Had to do with child support, or a business disagreement, or something. 😄

      Anyhow...

      • YT-1300: Corellian freighters like the YT series have been a staple of traders for hundreds of years. The YT-1300 design is nearly two hundred years old, but famous as the craft of choice for smuggler-turned-freedom fighter Han Solo. Its hull contains a surpising amount of room for cargo and equipment. These craft often hold unpleasant surprises for would-be raiders.

      • YT-1930: The YT-1930 is a newer model than the 1300, and is much faster and better defended. Its advanced sensor system eliminates a great deal of interference from the hyperradar displays, and it has room for a devastating array of weaponry. It carries somewhat less cargo than the 1300, but when fresh out of the yard, it can handle runs that a stock 1300 wouldn't dare try.

      • YT-2550: The YT-2550 has the smallest cargo bay of the current YT line, but its performance is better than either the 1300 or the 1930. Though its odd shape doesn't make it look remotely spaceworthy, the 2550 has a reputation for screwballing the most elaborately laid trap. Suffice it to say that if you're looking for a pretty good ship, this is one to consider.

      • CR90 Corvette: Corellian Corvettes have been popular vessels since the waning days of the Old Republic. Though the design is old, there's something elegant about the hammerhead bow. Its thick armor and powerful engines made it a favorite of Rebel Alliance blockade runners, so much so that this keel is nicknamed the "Rebel Blockade Runner."

      • CR100 Corvette: In recent years, the advent of new technologies has allowed CEC to retool its CR90, creating this craft. With all the best aspects of the CR90, and powerful shields to match, this craft is a favorite of traders and fighters alike.
The CR100 is available both in the shipyard, and in the outfitter as an upgrade to the CR90. The shipyard version is cheaper, but less widely available.

      • TIE Enforcer: Sienar Fleet Systems' Twin Ion Engine ("TIE") fighter series has been popular for decades. Nowadays the fast, well-shielded TIE Enforcer is used primarily by security forces, though they've also been seen in the hands of pirates. It carries six lasers and two Needle launchers, and has the distinction of having the best atmospheric handling of the entire TIE series. It's also dirt cheap, though its cargo capacity is lacking.

      • TIE Striker: An outgrowth of the TIE Enforcer, Strikers are slow and clumsy for TIE craft. However, the unassuming hull conceals a wide variety of armament, along with thick armor and shields. TIE Strikers, when used by system security, are the heavy hitters that go after capital ships while the TIE Enforcer handles opposing fighters.

    • Civvie ships, Part 3:

      • Shinobi: Hundreds of years before humanity left Earth, shinobi (also known as ninja) worked in the shadows of Japan as the forerunners of commandoes and special forces. New Japan has long treasured its heritage, culminating in the creation of the Shinobi -class starfighter by New Japan Shipyards. Built for speed and defense, Shinobi are lightly armed and built for surgical strikes.

      • Samurai: As the Shinobi was named for ancient Japanese commandoes, so the Samurai -class gunship was named for Japanese noblemen/soldiers of the same era. Samurai were masters of swordplay and wielded two swords -- the katana and wakizashi -- to cut down their opponents; this gunship wields two Corona launchers* in a similar fashion. It is wickedly fast for a gunship, but it lacks the range of competing craft.

      • Foxfire: Until the advent of the Black Knight, the Merlin Starcraft Corporation F-80 Foxfire was the fighter of choice for the United Galactic Fighter Corps, and remain's MSC's only addition to the super-competitive starfighter market. The X-shaped strike foil wings and vectored thrust give it incredible agility; modified Gale -class assault cannons** and powerful lasers give it great firepower. Unfortunately, the long gooseneck is highly vulnerable to precision fire, and a "fox" pilot who wants to live to retire MUST keep enemies away from above and below.
(Author's note: The Foxfire looks incredibly similar to the Ghoral Frigate in Polycon, but that's unintentional. I came up with the design, a cross between the X-wing and Kestrel, before I even knew Polycon existed.)

      • Starchaser: The Nubian Design Collective created this little scoutship decades ago. Its armament is light and its defenses are thin; it relies on its speed and powerful navicomputer to escape. This is a favorite of the Shistavanens, many of whom are explorers and scouts by trade.

      • Ranger: The RC-1 Ranger is a favorite of the United Galactic Exploratory Service. With enough cargo space and range to keep a good-sized team operational for months, Rangers are common sights in Rimward areas of the UGF. The Ranger is also popular with freighter pilots and courier services.

      • Saladin: The Saladin -class destroyer is the third-most recent destroyer keel used by the UGN, after the Galaxy -class. Though relatively outdated, TEC still sells them since many poorer worlds cannot afford newer capital ships. Saladins carry several weapons, but their greatest strength is their maneuverability.

      • Hypergate Tender: Since most of the hypergates were ancient when the UGF was founded, their components have deteriorated, which can make them unsafe. These tenders are necessary to keep them running. Even the Varellavites and Ganba won't attack them when they fly UGHGA*** transponder codes; they know that hypergates are the only thing that allows them to respond to emergencies quickly.

      • Mining Ship: Mygkos Sky Mines created this vessel in response to the growing demand for a mining ship that could also fight off pirates. The U-42 mounts Koensayr heavy lasers to defend itself, and Mygkos' own mining lasers for you-know-what; these vessels perform both jobs admirably.

      • The IM74-3 Corona missile is an infrared-guided missile with a concussion warhead.
** Assault cannon: A variant of the classical chaingun, the assault cannon encases its shots in a plasma jacket that boosts their penetration and speed. Though they require ammunition, they're easier to maintain than laser cannons. The Gale -class (fixed, forward-facing) and Tempest -class (four-barreled automated point-defense) assault cannons are built by Magnum Dynamics, Incorporated, and comprise a good sixty percent of their weapon sales.
*** United Galactic Hypergate Authority: The Galactic government agency that has been in charge of the international hypergate system since Sigma Shipyards folded during the Depression.

IF so, then I will help out as best as I can. But you have a lot of ships that need building. A LOT. So we'll see how that works out.

    • Another minor faction with its own set of ships and outfits is a private security firm. Darkwing Security, Ltd. provides security contractors (read: mercenaries) to anyone willing and able to pay their fees. CEO Shandic'hend'odono, a Chiss, is a retired member of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force, and he modeled Darkwing's training programs on those of the CEDF.

Darkwing Ltd. partially subsidizes its mercenary operations by selling munitions and starships from its headquarters in the Gamfel System. You can find both Galactic and Chiss outfits on Darkwing Station (one of the largest space stations in Known Space, at 30 kilometers in diameter), as well as four ship classes unique to Darkwing:

      • Darkwing Falcon: Darkwing Ltd.'s swift Falcon -class starfighters are based in part on the ThrensinCorp F-40 Dynacross. Instead of Needle missiles, however, the Falcon mounts Icepicks as its secondary weapon, giving it great effectiveness against capital ships, which, compounded by its powerful engines and strong defenses, once won it the Fighter of the Year Award from Starship Trend magazine ten years running.

      • Darkwing Hawk: The Darkwing, Ltd. Hawk -class Personnel Carrier is an unusual vessel. It was designed as a troop transport, and excels in said role: it can carry up to three thousand soldiers and enough matériel to launch full ground campaigns. However, like other great vessels, it is easily modified and can become a (rather overpowered) gunship in a pinch. Shandic'hend'odono uses a modified Hawk as his personal vessel.

      • Darkwing Eagle: The Darkwing, Ltd. Eagle -class Destroyer is a fast, maneuverable warship whose design is oriented around escort duty. They are usually the first in and last out of space combat. Standard mission roles include search-and-destroy, search-and-rescue, blockades, and babysitting convoys and the much larger Dragon -class battleship. The craft is thickly shielded and carries firepower comparable to a Chevron.

      • Darkwing Dragon: Darkwing, Ltd.'s Dragon -class battleship looks rather ungainly at first glance. A first glance, however, is all one is likely to get if one is the opposing side. This juggernaut comes stock with a dozen Falcons, several turbolasers, Stingray and Icepick missiles, electro-pulse torpedoes, and redundant shield systems so powerful that the Dragon seems nearly invincible. The original DWS Dragon prototype is on display at Darkwing Station, and its sister ship, the Demonbreaker , is the flagship of the mercenary group.

      "Yay."

The Hapes Consortium is a cluster of 63 worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy, and an influential member of the UGF. The Hapans are a human subrace descended from Old Republic-era pirates who would loot ships and kidnap beautiful females. This went on for many decades, until the women rose up and took control.

Nowadays the Hapes Consortium is a matrilineal constitutional monarchy ruled by the Queen Mother, and a formidable military power. It has to be, since piracy is still rampant in the Hapes Cluster.

      • Miy'til Fighter: The Hapes Consortium's favored snubfighter is a small, speedy vessel that is specially crafted for combating the notorious piracy of their space. Though not as heavily armed or defended as the Galactic Navy's Black Knights, the Olanji/Charubah Miy'til Fighter is quite effective in combat. It is equipped with a powerful hyperdrive, and has extensive range for long patrols.

      • Miy'til Assault Bomber: The Olanji/Charubah Miy'til Assault Bomber is a powerful ship used exclusively by the Hapes Consortium. Though it is faster and more agile than the Starhawk, the Scallopshell has it beat cold for offensive capabilities, mainly due to the fact that the Miy'til is usually used against pirates rather than dedicated warships. The Consortium reserves these starfighters for major offensives; few outside the Hapan Cluster understand the ship's capabilities.

      • Hapes Battle Cruiser: The 400-meter Hapes Battle Cruiser has sleek lines and powerful weapons, making it the perfect vessel for patrolling the outer reaches of the Hapes Cluster. It is very fast and maneuverable for a capital ship. According to Andromedan folklore, Hapan Prince Isolder offered a Nova -class cruiser to Han Solo if he would cease his efforts to win the hand of Leia Organa. Solo declined the offer.

      • Hapan Battle Dragon: Though they are shaped oddly for combat warships, the Hapes Consortium's Battle Dragons are Hapan pirates' worst nightmares. Each carries a large number of Miy'til fighters and bombers, along with a wide variety of weapons and powerful defenses. The true genius of the Battle Dragon, however, is derived from its unconventional round form: the saucers can rotate independently, which, in the hands of a savvy captain, gives it nearly double the firing rate of competing designs. (Code-wise, this will actually be a result of having more guns.)

    • I've decided on theme music for EVN:UGF. I'll post the link when I get it uploaded to my Box.net account this afternoon. The music is by a band called Killing Avarice. Master of Shadows' classmate Johnny Cotten (real name) composed it.

EDIT: Here's the download link. I'm calling the song "Echoes in Time" -- the track is from a demo CD, and none of the five songs have names. I'd appreciate any comments.

I've also got a number of CICNs done.

(Say I'm doing things all out of order if you like, but I have to juggle coding with college, so I have to celebrate small gains or my morale will be affected.)

    • I made a discovery a few minutes ago. I've been saying that the ships are all done, minus control bits and ionization characteristics, but it seems the Chiss ships slipped through the cracks somehow. It seems I made and named the SHIP resources without coding their armament, defenses, etc. I'll fix it quickly, though.

    • Got the Chiss ships done. I still can't figure out how they slipped through the cracks like that.

I haven't been able to do much work lately because I've got a major project due in a few days. Still, I did some more work on the art for the racing dialog, and the like. I made my own X2 and Alert cicns:

      Attached File hostile_alert_frame_1_preview.jpg (4.53K)
      Number of downloads: 14Attached File hostile_alert_frame_2_preview.jpg (5.96K)
      Number of downloads: 14
These are blowups of the alert icon.

      Attached File X2_icon_preview.jpg (2.22K)
      Number of downloads: 20
This is a blowup of the X2 icon.

I also made the appropriate masks for both.

    • Hey, StarSword! Good to see you again, dude!

    • It's been a long time since I made any progress whatsoever on the UGF conversion, but I have come to the conclusion that combining elements of Star Wars and Starcraft in the same plug is really not a good idea. I really have to pick one or the other. Therefore, I have made an executive decision: the copyrighted governments of the Andromeda Galaxy (Star Wars) and the Protoss and Zerg shall be replaced with my own; I'll save them in another file for later use.

I am, however, using the Star Wars galaxy map plug as a starting point for the Andromeda Galaxy, to save me some programming time. (That's IF I can get the thing to download properly -- the webpage says it's 185k, but when I downloaded it came out as 4.7k. Something's wrong  )

The first change will be the Chiss. They will be replaced with the Axe-tail Star Empire, a warlike but honorable race of primates with blade-tipped tails. Formerly a race of feuding warlords in the aftermath of a devastating interstellar war, the Axe-tails were united about a thousand years ago by twin priest-queens, Ra'kor and Ravirr of House Uranda. The current emperor, Kalzak Uranda, is Queen Ra'kor's great-(times about ten)-grandson. The Axe-tail Imperial Starfleet is easily a match for the best of the United Galactic Navy.

Another major change is the addition of a new government: the Kyrzakagalans, in place of the Vagaari. Similar in concept -- interstellar nomadic warlords -- the 'Kags (Galactic slang) frequently prey on Andromedan shipping lanes. Though they have little concept of tactics or national unity, as each warrior seeks honor first for himself, next for his immediate family, and third for his clan chieftain, they can be dangerous to freighters. Also, the last two times a strong chieftain managed to unite most of the clans (the two Kyrzakagalan Wars), they were difficult to defeat because they wouldn't commit to a decisive battle (you can't get honor if you get yourself killed); during the Second 'Kag War, victory came only after a Galactic commando team assassinated the chieftain. (In case you're wondering, the First 'Kag War happened in the Milky Way Union era, and ended after a clever Union admiral managed to trap them into a decisive battle near a black hole.)

      QUOTE (JoshTigerheart @ Sep 21 2007, 04:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Personally, I dislike it when people surgically pull races from universe and put them in their own. For me, it ruins the plot. It'd be like playing Zelda, going to the forest, and finding Tolkien's Hobbits there guarding the forest temple. Could you at least change their names and make some minor alterations so it doesn't look like a blatant rip-off at glance?

This post contains no intended offense.

This reply is way late, but no offense taken. As much as I liked the drawing I made of the Protoss Cruiser, now that I've matured some I have to agree: yanking them into the EVN universe really isn't a good idea, so the Protoss and Zerg are leaving my main hard drive for deep space. Maybe I'll come back to that later, but I'll think of something else to replace them with.

I will be making the modifications to the REZ files as quickly as possible, given I'm still in school. I'll be using my gallery at DeviantArt to post concept art. Click the Gallery button, then click Devious Folder (for some reason it's not letting me rename it right now). I need modelers, primarily; all who help get recognition in the credits, and PERS resource of their choice.

Also at DeviantArt: a novel-in-progress called Justice By Any Means , which features one of the storylines of EVN:UGF.
