There are two ways to make rings with GIMP. Both are complex, one can be used to take advantage of ring textures, (e.g. the Saturn's Rings textures that are just a cross section of the rings from the outer ring to the inner ring.) and the other is used to make rings from scratch. I'll write a bit more about them later, sorry to leave you hanging. For now, I'll just point out that my avatar used the former method for its "phantom planet."
Nice find with those seamless textures, but there is no .gtx viewer program for OS X (which is what I'm using now that my Windows machine conked out) which means that many of us will be stuck with 512x512 .jpg textures. For a beginner who's making small, 200x200 planets this is fine, but I'm making 1000x1000 planets and I know people who've gone up to making 3000x3000 planets. (Eeek...) Yes, I know the textures are seamless so they can be any size you want, but I've always been able to point out patterns in planets when they use seamless textures. I guess I'm just picky. <_<
You're doing a good job with those planets, by the way.
I'm looking to create man made rings like the one on Earth, Kontik, and Kel'ariy....
I'm running a Mac as well and was disapointed that we don't have a .gtx viewer... <_< Oh well. I'm not making the huge planets so I don't really need one for now.
Oh and thanks for the encouragement!!
