No it doesn't, as you end up directly opposite, the sphere effect isn't directly possible in 2D, and so this method is used instead. Think about it, if you're using a graphics program to texture a 3D toroid, you use a rectangle, so that side matches side, and all four corners join up when you bend it into a toroid.

Of course, it's perfectly fine and usable for a game, so it doesn't matter.

      Visualizes Oh.

Well, yeah, it's as close as it's gonna get, unless you want gaps near the corners...

Multi-part planets take time, but are easy enough to do. I used 8 pieces for the planet above.
The movie should answer any further questions. Cities can be done, you just need to lump them
on your planet nicely. I might whip an example up if I'm feeling inspired.

Yes you can. Set it to a nav thingy > 4 and make in uninhabited. Boom. Done. You could also use this as a background instead of a background system color.

Have you experimented with f5? It reselects the closes spob. Regardless of navidifault status. Also, even spobs above the four show up on radar, and the only thing that determines what an AI will land on is location (and habitation). Though they do prefer the first four, they will land on any thing, pretty much so long as it is within the no jump zone, or something similar.

Note im not entirely sure f5 does the trick if the spob is unlandable, but im pretty sure it does.

Umm, Regulus, it sends you back to the opposite side. So if you head straight right and wrap, it will send you to the far left, not the center. This is perfect: it gives the impression of a sphere.

I see someones never studied topology 😛

uh... yeah, left to right is correct, but if you go off the top, it brings you up the bottom. If should really shot you down the top displaced by half the width of the system (for a sphere), but it certainly doesnt do that. Definately a donut.

Uh, maybe it's just me but this doesn't work. You can still click on it.

    • Polycon has several "unlandable" spöbs.. I looked at one of them (Icara Shipyards' system has two of them) and the only odd thing is that they have a government of -1.

    • If you're referring to "icarus right arm" and "icarus left arm" (I'm not certain you are, as I've barely played Polycon, but the names look right), the other odd thing about them is that the "can land" flag is not checked. The default behaviour of a spob is un landable, and that flag allows you to land on it (and allows you to select it using the "L" key (default).

Guy's right. In Nova, you can always click on a spob to select it.

And the final nail in the coffin for this idea is mentioned in the thread Nick Anderson linked to a couple posts up. Anything large enough to be a system background will likely overload your memory, and cause the game to crash.

    • Unlandable and unselectable are different. As guy pointed out, you can click on anything.

      Yep, sorry for the typo.

Just out of curiousity—how would a spöb with a government of -1 behave? A pirate planet like Houseless where you have no legal record?

      -1 means independant.
