I need help with making a ship...

Hi I need help with making my ship I have the graphics but I need help with the masks this is what pipeline told me: Okay, the problem was easy to find out: your mask data contains only
white blocks! You need to make a
mask in such a way that white pixels represent the areas where the
actual ship pixels (and ~only~ the
ship pixels) are located. I'm talking about anything that is the ship
      itself, not the black area
      surrounding it.

Secondly, is there any reason why both the mask and the sprite itself
extend way off to the side?
Surely they only need to be big enough to encompass the ship itself...?

      best always,

      Dave @ ATMOS

      So please help me!!!

    • What programs are you using? For both your ship and EVNEW or Mac?

    • EVNEW and Photoshop.

Your making a ship in PHOTOSHOP!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

How the heak are you doing THAT?!?!?!?!?!?

Your suposed do do ships in 3d last time I checked.

    • Its just a different color of the IDA lol.

    • What's wrong with photoshop? You can make decent enough ships in photoshop.

    • You can make ships in Photoshop. It's not required that you use 3D. Common sense, dude. It's just images. It doesn't matter how you make them. You could take pictures if you wanted. As long as it gets done. There is no 'supposed to', it's just how it's generally done, more than anything else because it's the easiest way to make 45 degree sprites.

    • Guys, please give this gentleman a hand.

His problem is that he has no mask data -- it's simply a white block.

I don't know how he extracted the IDA Frigate graphics to change its colour without also extracting the mask, so can anyone tell him how to get hold of the mask on a PC? I have no idea -- I have only ever edited Nova on a Macintosh.

    • As a side note, you can make a mask of whatever image you are making, planets, moons, ships- in photoshop by going to the image tab-> adjustments and select "invert". Occasionally photoshop goofs and leaves some color, if this is the case do the same steps again and select "greyscale".

    • Even in greyscale, the mask has to be just black-and-white- no shades of grey (makes my Nova choke, at least).

On another side note, has anyone noticed that GraphicConverter can save as a RLE? Has anyone used it?

On a reply to a previous side note, Tycho told me about how, in the ancient of days, people made thier ships in ClarisWorks- so PS is at least a step up!

    • All the ship sprites for Nova were compiled/composited in PhotoShop using custom scripts and actions -- Dr Ralph hadn't yet made m2s and the like.

    • I think the lastest EVNEW release is able to generate a mask from the black and non-black parts of a ship image. I can't vouch for this though, never got the opportunity to try (only used EVNEW a few times on school PC).

Yeah but it doesn't work so well

    • Ok I tried the mask but thats not the problem... When I'm in the ship it shows the whole sprite and the blinking lights are the only resemblence to te IDA so thats a problem. <_<

    • "Thw Whole Sprite"- what do you mean? All of the frames at once?
