Maybe they don't stop at the edge of the shield bubble, but do they deal their damage when they hit the shield, or when they hit the ship? If you position your ship in such a way that the shot passes through the bubble and out the other side without actually hitting the ship, do you still take damage?

To my knowledge, no. The shield bubble is only "activated" when your actual sprite takes a hit. The visual effect is just that--visual. So, if a shot is fired where there is no actual ship sprite, but only a potential shield bubble effect, then you will not take damage and the projectile will continue uninterrupted.

    • Then it's been changed. When I was testing shield bubbles with the first iteration of SFA (I want to say, oh, EVN v. 1.0.1-3 or thereabouts) the shots sure looked like they stopped at the edge of the shield bubble.

It may have been one shot hitting to activate the bubble and then a second shot hitting the bubble before it disappeared.

    • Doing it that way in the engine would make no logical sense. Matt Burch is not a fool.
