    • Homing Pigeons!!! I love those, but only in Worms 😛

      As for names:

      Scorpiacore
      Monitor
      Leviathon
      Trogolyte
      Harpy
      Dragon

Just stick a couple of interesting words in front and you have a ship name (example: Big Bad Trogolyte) 😄

Then I guess you've never played against me in SOFII.

Homing pigeons are pretty cool, but let's be serious here. Pigeons are like the rodents of the sky. They're all over the place, spreading their gunk where they go. And if pigeons are the mice of the skies, then seagulls come in as the rats of the skies. Messy, noisy, and eat everything, but I digress.

I've come up with some more names:
      The Runny Nose
      The Red Death
      The Black Angel
      The Green Goblin
      The Harbringer of Doom
      The Northern Gale
      The Feisty Seagull
      The Killer Tomato

Okay, fine. Street pigeons are irritating, scruffy, dirty, etc. But don't make fun of homing pigeons.. 😛

More names (I can keep this post on topic -and- rant about pigeons! Amazing!):
      The Darkened Wave
      Mothers' Curse
      The Blackened Bough

My pirate-name-creation streak is starting to wear a little thin..

Yea, and Mantaray can use the webpages that we've suggested. It's much more fun, however to come up with names on your own.

This wouldn't be a problem for government ships, because the US named them things like The Constitution and The Patriot

I don't believe there was ever a U.S.S. Patriot. There was Chesapeake, Constitution, Adams, Constellation, Congress, President, United States at the time of The War of 1812.

And the US didn't even exist in the 17th century (1600-1699). They were British colonies at this time. Maybe the 19th century though...

btw, if you need any historical information about sailing ships of the 18-19th century, I am fascinated with that period and would be happy to provide any assistance I could.

      Now, pirate names...

Queen Anne's Revenge has been suggested a lot. Before Teach captured this ship, it was named the Concord.

      Black Pearl 🙂
      Interceptor
      Dauntless
      Blanchefleur
      Aimable Louise
      Swordfish
      Wine Dark Sea

Most of the names suggested (i.e. Bloody Death) and whatnot are not names native to the Age of Sail. Back then, everybody spoke better English and Captains seriously thought about their ship's names. I don't think a Captain would be caught dead commanding the "Doomsblade". And don't forget that most pirate ships throughout the ages were galleys. You know, those long rowboats you see in those old Greek battles? Very few pirates had frigates, such as Jack Sparrow 🙂 and Edward B. Teach (Blackbeard).

schooner, yacht, cruiser, yawl, ketch, cutter, sloop

If you were making a plugin about the age of sail (which I briefly toyed around with), do NOT use these ship classes. Schooners were no more than ships who had two coastal sails. Yacht can be applied to any ship. Cruiser is any large military ship. Yawls and Ketches are variations on the schooner, based on where the mizzen mast falls relative to the rudder post. Sloops have various meanings.

The true ship classes of the Age of Sail:

Coastal Rigged (you know, those Marconi rigs, the ones in the marinas today):
Cutter: light ship, maybe 40 feet long, carrying a gun or two with a hold
Sloop: lighter than a cutter, maybe open-topped
Schooner: 2 masted coastal rigged sailing vessel (pretty big, sometimes converted into Man-of-War as corvettes/sloops)

Square Rigged (you know, Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson and Horatio Hornblower)
Brig: 2 masted vessel commonly mounting a heavy broadside, but with VERY limited range: 4-12 guns
Sloop/Corvette: Only called a corvette by the French and landlubbers, these ships were 3-masted sailing vessels with a well ranged broadside (i.e. balance of range and power). 12-22 guns
Frigate: Heavier ship, carrying about 200-500 crews, mounting guns from light 12 pounders (28 gun frigates) to heavy 32 pounders (56 gun frigates). 28-56 guns

      Ship-of-the-Line:
74: small, staunt, faster than the 1st rate, slower than the frigates, one of the true "powerships". 50-84 guns on TWO decks
100: large, slow clunker: used only for fleet engagements: 84-136 guns
