    • Nova Developers question

Hey. I've been wanting to make a plug for a while. I finally got some free time and wanna start w/ something small. I dled the Bible of course. But... It doesn't actually tell you how to make a plug, it just tells you what everything is when you look at it w/ novatools+res...

So I guess my question is... what the hell do I do. Is there a better Bible I don't know about. The current one I'm using is Matt Burch's last revised 5/2/03...

But honestly, Im really starting to get what each slight change in every res box does... But if I wanna make my own plug I'd have to be able to come up w/ my own bits and stuff. I dunno, I'm missing something huge, and I know I'm a complete newb, and I'm sorry for bugging you guys. i just wanna do something simple (other then a small little edit to a mission or a ship, I've done that)

I wanna like create my mission that gives a new ship and reveals a new planet and a new outfit or something, so I cover my bases. Can someone help me out?

Ben - Totally ashamed of his noobness

there are probably lots of topics like this. Get Mission computer or EVONE. For ship making EnRle and DeRle apps are also handy.

NovaTools+ResEdit currently is the most complete editor available. You just use a blank plugin, and start adding resource types (cmd+K, I believe). All you need to do is type in the name of the resource (shďp, for instance. The umlaut is necessary. You type option+u and then the vowel to get it) and press return. Then within the resource, cmd+k creates new resource ids. Then if you get info, you can change the id and the name etc.

    • By the way, a blank plug can be easily created by: downloading a cheat plug weighting only 4kb or so, strip it down of everything it has (copy it first if you really wish to keep cheating, but soon you'll be doing your own cheats so...), save, rename it "blank plug", and everytime you will want to make a new plug, make a copy of this blank one. Some editors offer the possibility to create blank plugs, but once you have one it's easy to create as many as you want.

The Bible (remember to capitalise this Holy Scripture, lest of being an heretic!) is just a technical document expaining the way the information must be put, and should therefore be considered a reference. No more, no less. Actually, the best way of learning how to do plugs is to observe, study, spy, couter-spy, reverse engineer, tinker with the standard scenario in the data files (by the way, if you wish to tinker, you'd better lock your data files now, just in case, and to make the mods copy the resource with the ID you want to tinker with, paste in your plug, and modify there). If you wish to add something new, simply add it to your plug with an ID unused, and put the new ID in field of modified resources where necessary (for instance, if you wish to add a new spöb, you need to modify the sÿst you want it to appear in to include the ID of the spöb in the right field); by the way, for better browser compatibility you should put here your umlauted letters this way: & e uml; for ë, etc... in order to avoid character mapping incompatibilities.

And I must say you: you are one of the most polite, humble, reasonable, and spelling respectful newb at plugs we've seen for at least one month or so. Don't be afraid of your newbness, and please ask us if there's something precise you don't understand.

    • Zacha,
      Hehehe. Thanks man.

Actually, believe it or not the first thing I began to edit around with was the Data file. I wasn't getting some missions I wanted to get, then I realized I missed the bit, so I deleted the Availability bit and turned the randomness to 100%... Then I continued to do that for the other 8 missions in the string. I changed them back right after I completed the mission of course, but still, my first editing experience was in data, where everyone says "don't touch!"

    • One more question: a bit off topic. Frozen Heart and Femme Fatale... Nova any time soon? Those were two of my favorite plugins for Override.

And if Bombcat wanted (although I haven't seen him forever) I suppose he could set F-25 below Kontik with those probe explorations and all.

    • Ok. So I'm working on it but I realize whats confusing to me. bits. I can't keep any of them straight. How am I supposed to remember the bit for Earth, the bit for this spaceship or this government or this mission or any of it. I've been using Mission Computer to help me edit. Is there like a bit guide where each bit for each planet outfit mission system and ship is listed or anything?

Martin Turner is working on a complete re-write/update of FH, including FF and FH2. He has said he will not release them until all are complete. According to his last update, he is probably just over one third of the way done.

There is a slightly outdated bit guide in the addons section; probably under guides. You may use the add-on search utility I created to search for it; it is linked from my signature.

    • odellben, try to edit your posts and put various questions in the same topic (this one) and start new ones only when necessary, I think it would be better.
