Unfortunately, Strata 3.0.2 for PC was infinitely better then 3.5 (They ripped off half the tools to make it just a big advertisement for the pro version). But now the registration site for 3.0.2 is down and it can never be used again. I tried using a few other freeware programs, but none of them are as good as strata. As far as texturing is concerned, making a texture on a basic graphics editing program, importing it, and applying it to ship parts should be good enough. Keep in mind that the details are almost too small to see and the eye tends to have mercy on objects in motion.
Anyway, just practice for a while. While the people who do know how to make graphics may have lots of experience, they all started somewhere. And if you can make your own ships and make them look good, you'll be proud of yourself.
Then again, I haven't tried doing this and it may be much harder than I think, but don't let me discourage you from trying.

What the... half the time for me the page stops loading, the ship links dont work, and on the one occation a download started, it went along at .5k/second for 24 seconds before dieing. The pages doent even load well for me. Hence "modem studios". Did you get decent speeds and such?
EDIT: I just had someone else try the download and it went fine... wierd.

Browser spesific bug. Mozilla Firebird doesnt work. IE (much as I hate it) worked for some reason.
