    • unexpectedly quit and now won't reload

My son has been playing all day, periodically saving. He was in "Endless Wind" and was moving down to the next map and the program "Unexpectedly Quit". He relaunched, but his saved game won't load -- a bunch of black lines (rectangles, actually) appear in the center of the screen, and nothing happens. Other saved games work just fine. Apparently, the file is corrupted somehow. Anyway to fix it?

      OS 10.2, iMac with 512MB.

Welcome to the boards!!! He's obviusly using the registered version, if he's in the Plains of Endlesswind. Hmmm.....either the save file is corrupted and unusable for some reason, or something else is responsible for the problems your son is experiencing with PoG. Try checking the preference folder in your harddrive for emitgop. Delete that file and try again. I think that that only happens with unregistered copies of PoG, though.

      Mr. Warbear,

Do you have any plug-ins installed?

I have 10.1, but it's been more than a week since I sent a request for my PoG license code and still no code. I resent a request a few days ago, though. Hope it comes soon! 🙂

      Mr. Warbear,

How long has your son been playing PoG? Did he start playing before you upgraded to 10.2(since that was just released a little while ago)? If so, did he have any problems similar to this before the upgrade? Was he able to do what he attempted to do this time back with 10.X without problems?

Finally, if he reverts to an older/other saved game, can he go back to where the error occured and still get the error? Or does the game keep chugging along without problem?

      Thanks.

Good catch! He's had it about a week. I installed 10.2 the night before the problem occurred. Suspicious.

If so, did he have any problems similar to this before the upgrade?

      No.

Was he able to do what he attempted to do this time back with 10.X without problems?

Yes. All he was trying to do was save when the game crashed. He saves a lot. This one time it just crashed.

Finally, if he reverts to an older/other saved game, can he go back to where the error >occured and still get the error? Or does the game keep chugging along without problem?

He hasn't gotten back to that point yet (says it'll take several hours.
I wouldn't have bothered posting except he said he really lost a lot of ground.

Thanks for the tip about the upgrade. I'll look at the files in the terminal -- maybe there's something obvious.

Thanks. Yeah, please check the logs, there may be something in there.

There has also been some reports of 10.2 behaving oddly with saving games. I don't use 10.2, so I am not familiar with what it does, but apparantly you can't create a new saved game(ie, you have to overwrite an existing saved game). Perhaps there are some other oddities between 10.2 and PoG that need to be ironed out.

I would recommend that you "manually" create a few extra saved games for you son to save with. If he uses just 1 saved game and continually overwrites it, and then something bombs and corrupts the saved game, then he will lose a lot of playing time without much recourse to reaquire it. If he incrementally saves his games(ie, save1.pog, save2.pog, save3.pog, etc) as he goes along, if one game gets corrupted then his previous saved game shouldn't be too far back. But again, the only problem with this is that 10.2 won't create new saved games. So in the mean time why don't you create a slew of saved game files(either duplicate one of his saves and rename it incrementally, or create a blank text file and name it with a .pog extension) that he can overwrite his saved games with.

Good luck, and keep us posted with anything you might find.

    • An update...

He's made it past the point at which it failed before and has been able to save - didn't take him "hours" either 🙂 I made him several save files so he should be all set. I'm beginning to think the initial problem was just one of those "random" crashes that happen, even in the supposedly bulletproof Jaguar.
      Thanks for all your help!!!

    • I am having the same problem with the thin lined rectangles on the screen when I try to load a saved game. I was to the point where I reached the Witch's Finger and was pretty far into the game, Level 20. The issue is, is that I am still using OSX.1, actually OSX.1.5. I am pretty upset that I cannot access this game. It will basically mean I may never play the game again having to repeat all of the work I have already done. Can someone actually help with this??

      Thanks for the help...

To Thunderforge: He's new here and unregistered so he couldn't start a topic of his own.

To Shrlckhlms: Welcome to the boards. Getting registered is easy and doesn't cost a thing. You will always find someone to help here if we can. If you register, as a member you can post new topics on any aspect of PoG here and also use any other forum in Ambrosia's list of forums. I hope Thunderforge solved your present problem. If not post back - preferably with a topic of your own. ~RD

      Mr. Shrlckhlms,

      Please explain your problem:

      • You get thin lined rectangles on your screen?
      • Does this cause PoG to quit, or does the game continue to run but it is unviewable?
      • Does this occur all the time or just with a certain saved game file?
      • Do you have any plug-ins loaded?
      • Registered or unregistered version?

      Thanks.

The problem seems to occur when you had a plugin activated on a file, then deactivated it and loaded the file. You then get the dialog box lines. Well, if it's a dialog box, then it has to have a pulsating blue button (or an outlined button if you are on OS 9 or Windows). How do you get past the pulsating blue button with the keyboard? You press return. So press return a few times and then you can play the character.

BTW: iMac G3 600mhz, running Mac OS 10.2.6 if it helps any.

    • I am running on a iBook G3 with 500 mhz and if I run PoG within the window it comes up that it is impossible to load game when I am trying to load my saved game. I had two games saved and I originally thought it may be because I was not supposed to have more than one saved game. I thought that may be rediculous but it may cause a conflict. I erased one of the games and the other one still will not load. I see someone had a work around, what does that mena and will that help me open the saved game. I just don't want to lose my game.

There are 2 possible reasons that this menu will come up:

      • You had a plug-in loaded when you saved the game, and you don't have it loaded now. Solution: Make sure the plug-in is loaded.

      • Your saved game became corrupted. Solution: There isn't one. Your saved game got hosed. You will need to use an alternate saved game or start over.

General tips: When you save your game do so with numbers and incrementally. Ie, "Save001," "Save002," "Save003" etc. This way if something happens to your most current saved game you will not lose much by reverting back to the one before it.
