1. Have a single beam weapon with innaccuracy set to however wide you want the spray to be. Life = 1, reload = 1, or whatever you want your beam to be.
2. Set the "fire simultaneously" flag in the weapon.
3. Make 2 outfits for the weapon. (This is where the problem might come in, solutions later). The first outfit is a normal, visible weapon outfit that grants a number of the second weapon outfits. The second outfit is the weapon, invisible.
4. Set the fuel drain to y/x, where y is what you want the fuel drain to be, and x is the number of weapons granted.
Now, when you buy the weapon, you actually get 10 copies or so that fire simultaneously, for 10 dancing beams. Pretty close to a wide-angle lens, and it looks like a normal weapon (ie, no indication that you actually have 10).
Solutions to 3: Nova has problems with multiple outfits granting the same weapon. In this case, I believe it uses the first outfit when it wants to display info (in the ship-purchase dialog, for instance). But if the problem is more major than that, with one limitation it can still work: the spread-beam must be primary trigger. What you do in this case is make 1 weapon that is actually visible, and a 2nd weapon for the invisible component. Set it up as above, and when you press the primary trigger, zap. Still looks like a normal weapon (Outfits: a jammer, a spread-beam laser, a reactor, 2 wacky missiles, etc...). However, the AI isn't bound to the primary-trigger rules, and may or may not use all of the firepower available to it.
The other problem with both solutions is that the ship display may look wierd.
Ship Weapons:
1 Spread Beam Laser
9 Invisible Spread Beam Lasers
or
Ship Weapons:
1 Spread Beam Laser
9
Although it might be smart enough not to display the weapon if it's invisible. The point is you have to include all the portions of the laser in the ship resource for the AI to take advantage of it. It's definately best done as a player-only weapon.

would it work if i had the visible outfit simply grant 10 invisible OUTFITS of the other type which actually grant the weapon. (so that you aren't having two outfits that grant the weapon, but one outfit that grants the other outfits which grant the weapon)?
(example: a visible outfit doesn't give you the weapon, but instead, on purchase: Oxxx, Oxxx, Oxxx, Oxxx... times ten, and on sell: !Oxxx, !Oxxx, !Oxxx... tmes ten. {Oxxx being the second invisible outfit that grants the weapon})
I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me flat out that that wouldn't work, BEFORE i waste 5+ hours of my precious time experimenting only to find out that... it doesn't work.
so do you think it could work?
