Argh. I am doing a tutorial and accidentally zoomed in, and i cant make it zoom out, so now I am zoomed in massively (moving mouse around the view window shows no change in position), and I have no clue how to unzoom. I have no idea where to look for such basic information. I am halfway through thier basic tutorial. I would really rather not dump it and restart. Anyone willing to help out here?

Select the zoom tool, a magnifying glass with a + should appear, this allows you to zoom in, yes? Hold down ALT and it will turn to a magnifying glass with a - in it, which zooms out.

    • I think he means with Strata doesn't he? You can just get the "move view" tool and use that to zoom (arrows in corners). There is a strata online manual you know...

Oh, and if you put in to google "Download Strata 3D 3.02" you can find a university site that has both PC and Mac versions of that particular version. Why? It was the last one to have animation abilities in it, and this is handy for enreling.

Dude, just resize the window and hold control while you press either - for the selected object to fi in window, or = for all objects. A little practice and you should get the hang of it.

Once you've figured that out, make the window a multiple of the final sprite or whatever size. When you render, set it to the desired size, and...POOF! No paint scaling. Practice makes perfect! (I know from experience... :p)

That's what I thought - the method I described definitely zooms out in my version of Strata!

Well, if I'm that "CERTAIN PERSON", then you will notice that I supplied the actual installer made by Strata. I dont have any documentation either. I cant supply what I do not have. I will make an effort to get a copy of the documentation downloaded which I can stuff and upload to the downloads page Mazca gave 🙂 A simple google search should reveal the original documentation however...

      Er... no you dont...

Press apple-r (or control-r on the pc I assume) to bring up the render dialogue box. This allows you to up the render settings to acceptable standards, and change the size you render at. If you are wanting to make the size square for sprites, its best to get the window square before hand then changing the size as it wont clip anything accidentally. If you search, Im sure there will be something about where I explain about using cameras for making NOVA spins (to achieve the perfect 45 degree angle). I would explain it again but it takes bloody ages, and Im going to the pub...

A not on the render settings, you are best to bump them up conciderably. Make the texture 'fine' and put oversampling up to about 16. Make sure anti-aliasing is on. Also, you're best sticking with the raytracer. Note that these methods will bump up teh rendering time conciderable, but its definitely worth it... Examples to follow.

If anyone want any advice or help with using Strata, you might get a quicker respone if you email me: (url="http://"mailto:ecc2@st-and.ac.uk")mailto:ecc2@st-and.ac.uk(/url)ecc2@st-and.ac.uk

Heh, I put it up to 16 just for previews... for final renders? There is no limit to how long I'll be prepared to wait.

Yes, I know you did, but not extremely well. I had trouble understanding what you meant, and Im fairly well versed in Strata - someone who is new to the program may have a little more difficulty in understanding what you meant than I did...

To be honest, unless you are working in situations involving light being a key element of your scene (say like a big glass window with sunlight from outsite entering a room being the focus of the render), or extremely large renders zoomed in close, then much more than 16 is overkill. I'll render something up later tonight to show what I mean. You seriously wont notice much (if any difference between 16 and 64 is any situation you will come across making ships for any of the EV games.

No more than 25. More is overkill and you dont get much more defanition at all despite a large increase in render times. 25 is what I use for all my final renders. I use 9 for previews.

Try the (url="http://"http://www.stratacafe.com/")StrataCafe(/url), and from there you will find links to (url="http://"http://www.1n2.be/strata/")this Strata Tutorials page(/url). Azdara is working on making up some modelling tutorials and I will be puting up my spin and engine flare tutorials again once (url="http://"http://el3.northernswamp.com/")el3(/url) is complete.

One thing about the dialog box is that a lot of it is blued out. (only for people who want to pay an arm and a leg for Strata plus) Among this stuff is the window size. I can get it down to 176x176 just by changing the window, but I still need to use paint. Is there still something I'm doing wrong here?

What the hell? I'm using Strata 3.0.2 and it works just fine. Have you checked to make sure the little drop-down box is set to "Custom?"

    • Yeah, if you arent using high enough oversampling to begin with, it wont let you use the higher texture settings, or other such things. What version are you using? If you are under 3.0.2 then thats what the problem will be. Should be the same under 3.5 base though... At least it is in my copy...

I have version 3.5. The problem is that I go to the window and everything below the "Render Alpha Channel" checkbox and above the "Light handling" dropdown is blued out. When I click on it, a little window comes up and basically says, "This is a 'Plus Feature.' You don't get to use this until you pay actual money for this stuff. With this feature, you will also get this, and that, and this, and blah, blah, blah, blah." (inhales) Am I the only one who hasn't paid for this or what?

Should probably be using 3.0.2—according to Ewan/Jules, i think it's supposed to be better.

Yeah. I downloaded it, and it's MUCH better. As it turns out, Strata 3D Base 3.5 was just a walking advertisement for the plus version. It took away a whole bunch of tools and saved them for the plus version (the picture sizing being one of them). 3.0.2 doesn't have as many tools as 3.5+ is supposed to have, but more than 3.5- has.
