[ANN] Starfleet Adventures "Present"

Since tomorrow is my 40th birthday, I've decided to be very hobbit-ish and give the Nova community a big present.

Early tomorrow morning, I shall post a link from which everyone can download SFA v0.2.2a -- that's alpha build 2.2 -- for one 24-hour period (from Nov. 11, 2003, 6:00 a.m. CST to Nov. 12, 2003, 6:00 a.m. CST).

I hope that a future EV Nova will hold the gövt-switch set expression, working like Wxxxyyy: hereby treat and let behave what belongs to gövt xxx as if it belonged to gövt yyy. This is the small tool we lack to build a believable scenario without unrelaistic amounts of resources and work.

I'm not sure if UncleTwitchy is under 4 feet tall and has feet as hairy as Robin William's back, but as in the great tradition of the Hobbits, he's going to give away the present of SFA Alpha 2.2. (Remember the birthday scene from Fellowship of the Ring? It states that Hobbits give away presents for their birthday instead of receiving them)

I'm not under 4 ft. and my feet aren't hairy (my toes, on the other hand...), but I probably could have gotten a role as an extra in the Shire if I shaved off the beard and 'stache. And put on about 50 pounds. But that's not what you all want.

Okay, folks, as promised...

A few things of which you must be aware:

Read the "Read Me" file.

This is an alpha build. While everything is eminently playable, there is still quite a lot of work to be done -- most significantly are the majority of officer, ship, and planet descriptions that still need to be written (especially the planets). The missions are still somewhat buggy, and some do not have their flavor text written yet. There are also a few ships that need to be re-rendered. However, the ship and weapon stats and system placement are all fixed at this point.

Read the "Read Me" file.

You start commanding a Hermes class Scout with the rank of Lieutenant Jr. Grade. Until you make full Lieutenant (not a difficult task by any stretch), your only command choices will be this and freighters. I recommend finding a Starbase where another Hermes is offered and trade up (by taking command of a freighter and then the other Hermes. This is because there is a bit that is set when you purchase the ship that is not set by the initial chär, and I don't have time to fix and upload it this morning.

Read the "Read Me" file.

Again, because of problems with the initial chär creation, when you name your first ship upon character creation, you should probably add "U.S.S." to the name. After that, you won't need to -- the game does it for you automatically.

Unfortunately, I still have two lawn mowings left (DAMN YOU RAIN!), so I can't play it. And, by the time I register it, you'll probably have a public beta available.

Oh well. I prefer to see plug-ins in their final state; it tends to ruin it for me when you see the bugs they had to work out. Plus, the aplha will probably crash everyone's machines the instant they fire that last phaser blast at that Romulan Bird of Prey, when it's only a pixel away.

Downloaded earlier (at 260 KB/s :D) and have just spent a couple of hours playing. Combat is pretty cool with the fast recharge rates and repairing ships. Had fun taking on the Klingons in my Hermes, spending most of the time running away, waiting for torpedo bays to reload.

Curious about what i have to do to make full lieutenant, though. Spent over year and a half in the game, have accumulated an average combat rating and have done several missions, but still no hint as to how to get promoted.

Noticed one weird possible bug as well. Every once in a while a fleet of hstile ships jump in. The ships can't move, look like very big fuzzy versions of Krypt nanites and don't fire on you. Can't be targetted either, so I can't tell what they are.

Really love the offier concept too.

That would be ion storms. Avoid them.

Okay, cool. Grabbed a fresh hermes straight away and have done a couple of survey missions (broke the Prime Directive once, woot!), but evidently I need to do more. I love the little debriefs you get at the end of them. Very TOS-ish.

Well, they may have. A starbase was firing at them and I did a quick flyby, firing hasers and photorps to see if I could blow them up, then I blew up instead. I'd assumed that it was the starbase's weaponry that got me since i wasn't being fired at at range, but if they're ion storms, then I guess it would make sense that they have a very short range weapon that would have got me while very close. Probably not a bug after all.
