    • Sidebar Question

Is it even remotely possible, through editing, say, some DITL resource, to put the sidebar along the bottom instead of along the right?

I know, I know... crazy idea.

    • I would imagine that changing the DITL or maybe even just using a diferent shaped pict would let you put it horizontally across the top. The sidebar is probably anchored to the top right corner of the screen and I don't know if you could change that.

    • I would doubt it, things like that are hard coded in to the game.

I used to know this. I'm pretty sure in game stuff like that is fixed, whereas unmoving elements like the spaceport can be adjusted.

I think if you made a horizontal pic you'd just end up having it either stretched out badly or just plain cut off. Worth a try, though..

    • I just tried the horizontal picture and it didn't work. The top left corner is a fixed location on the screen so the right hand side of the pict is cut off. The space where the sidebar was supposed to show up was black, and stars and ships disappeared behind it. ie. the sidebar was still there, it just didn't look like anything. I also couldn't find a DITL or DLOG for the sidebar.

I don't really think that puting the sidebar on the bottom would be a good idea anyway, since monitors are already wider than they are long. With the sidebar on the bottom, the field of view above and below your ship would get pretty small compared to out the sides.

I did find out that if you give, for example, the shield bar negative right and left locations in the intf resource it doesn't show up at first, but when you get shot it shows up in the main screen where you tell it to. Unfortunately after you get shot it stays floating there until a ship or an asteroid flies over it and erases it. Unfortunately it doesn't shrink as your shields go down, it's just an artifact on the screen.

I didn't think so, but it was worth finding out, don't you think?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but one of the SFA alpha testers asked about it and I thought it would be interesting to pursue.

      Thanks for the effort.

    • Nothing to add, just glad to know that someone finally figured this one out. Here too it's something that I've considered doing but I guess I can scrap those ideas now. Oh well.

I figured as much. Nothing in the gameplay window is actually "fixed" as in things are always changing, new data being inserted, etc. The EV engines have always been pretty unflexible in this regard. But like others have said, the actual practical use of it is pretty limited..
