    • Unorthodox landing scenes

Bryce: no idea how to use it. I need landing scenes for TGC, but I don't want to foist the job off on someone else (I AM a computer animator am I not? hmpm). While puttering around the Image Gallery I saw that someone mentioned something to pipeline about drawn trees. That got me thinking... what would be the reaction to 2D background scenes? Mostly pencil, maybe watercolor... I haven't really thought too much about it.

    • I would love it, personally. That's originally what I wanted for Sephil Saga. Instead, we have 2D scenes that look 3D (and look bitchin').

Only problem, and I thought about this for SS, is that they probably wouldn't look right without a theme- if that's the only instance of pencil and watercolor, there's a good chance it just won't look like it belongs. Part of my plan was to do at least the big ship pictures the same way. Overall, I think it would give the plug kind of a comic-book feel. In my case, I wanted anime-style art, which just seemed to go with a sci-fi setting with mechs.

Anyway, I say go for it!

    • I had a similar Idea to this a while ago, I thought that I could hand draw all the Landing pics, shipyard pics and mission pics for a TC. Partly because I love to draw, mainly because I can't do landing pics on the computer. It would be a lovely Idea, but I feel it could take alot longer than doing it on the computer. But I would still love to see some original artwork in someones plug-in.

      Go for it!

    • I've been considering doing the same thing as well though, my pics will have the cell shaded look (not cartoonish mind you). I really like the idea of perhaps just rough pencil sketches. Very artsy. Could be very attractive. Personally, I could do pencil pics much faster than I could ever do a pic on a comp. But it's just what you're comfortable with and the look you're trying to achieve. Watercolor too would look great. Very unique for sure.

    • Personally, I think it's not only a great idea, it's neccesity in some cases to have drawn landing pics. Certain atmospheres, especially horror genre plugs, would get a nice creepy feel from ink-drawn landing pics. And for anime-esque (I hope that's a word) plugs, a nice manga feel is hard (but not impossible) to do with simple cell shading. Although, as has been pointed out before, consistancy is a must. Like with the horror plug idea I mentioned earlier, maybe loading pics/movies in ink drawing would be needed to make the ink mesh with the rest of the plug. What would be cool in a case like that would be ship yard pics with a kind of rough, concept art like feel, but with normal EV spins. That would show a kind of depth to the plug-in, IMHO.

    • Homeworld is perhaps my favorite computer game, and it uses hand-drawn slides with narration between missions. It's a totally different look than the in-game art, but it all comes together wonderful.

I think hand-drawn landing scenes are an excellent idea.

      Peace,
      Luck

    • I too love homewold and I find the athe intermeshing between the hand drawn cut-scenes and the actual in-game art is wonderful. I think hand drawn scenes would add a very cool air to the plug-in (if properly implemented).

    • Homeworld was a masterpiece not only in its artistic appeal, but also in its storyline. The black-and-white 'animatic' movies between missions were kind of unorthodox, but they were really effective at communicating their point. As with 3-D rendered pictures, any hand-drawn ones should be interesting and add something to the player's experience upon the planet. Many of the same guidelines regarding placement of terrain objects apply. In fact, I might even try that myself sometime...

OT: The way Homeworld did backgrounds was so nice, but I realize there aren't going to be any engine changes. I know, I know, you don't need to remind me :).

    • ou could use different mediums to convey the atmosphere of the planet. For instance, for a rough pirate planet, you could use charcoals, and for a nice peaceful planet, you could use watercolors.

    • I was also thinking about using line drawings for the shipyard pics. Maybe have a high detail picutre of the ship overlayed on line drawn design sketches or something. Similarly, for the targeting pictures, a more schematic aproach, ala EVC and EVO, or maybe even beyond that, would be my preference.
And interesting landing scene, maybe on a hostile world, is sorta a city scene with an overlayed wiremesh, like you are seeing a scanner image with targeting points or labels for different locations. This would probably be only for special purpose worlds, but it could be pretty cool.

actually, even though the more artistic guys here (i included) would love that, the regular gamer ould not. Its your choice...

If you wanna quick, easy, free n dirty landscaper, downlaod terragen..... go to google, and type "terragen", there the homepage will appear. It works on MacOSX & MacOS9.1 .... you might wanna download CarbonLib 1.6 from versiontracker if you're on a OS9.1

Heres a proof of terragen's ease of use n quality on a very quickly done image, by me:

Why would the regular gamer object to it? If an artist pulls it off and make it look good, why would the regular gamer care about polygon count or render time? If you are concerned that a gamer might be repulsed by a hand-drawn art, make a chimera by making, say, a Terragen sky with ink foreground or something. But hey, I could be completely wrong. Any non-artists want to make the topic from us and give their two cents worth?

    • I'm not an artist. If you could pull off a decent looking set of pics, I would be fine with it. You might have to change the style of play to reflect the loss in "Suspension of Disbelief" that the ink drawings would cause. Of course, good enough analog art looks as real as digital art if you scan it in at a high enough resolution.

    • Can I just stick my hand up in massive favour of hand-drawn landing scenes? If they were all hand-drawn, I think it'd look great! 🙂

    • I too think it would be very cool.

    • Hahaha, a nice idea.

It would certainly be something fresh and original.

And originality is what makes a plug-in good.
