One of the reasons I decided that Escape Velocity: Nova was worth the $30 to register(I havn't bought a new game in a long time, I stick to the ones I know I like) was because of the plug-ins. Many will tell you that the plugs are the best reason to register. Not only is it fun and creative to make your own, but to use other peoples creativity and work to expand your own gameplay. I took out my credit card and signed up, I registered my game and began downloading plug ins. Then I decided it was time to do this stuff on my own. I realize I don't even know where to begin. So I ask on the IRC channel #nova. Turns out us PC users can't. No ResEdit for us. We don't even have resource forks(don't ask me... I havn't the slightest). So I was asking around about a ported version of nova tools when Pikeman suggested (url="http://"http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/B2Main.html")BasiliskII(/url) A Mac Emulator. I have used various emulators before(nestalgia for my old nintendo) but to emulate another operating system was a new Idea to me. I really wanted to get my $30 worth so I decided to give it a shot. It took a while and quite a bit of fooling around to get it to work but I've done it, I've gotten my emulator to work. It was difficult for me, mostly in finding a good ROM(or figureing out what a ROM was for that matter) and a copy of a Mac OS that worked. Many people gave me a link to (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/k_semler2002/mac.html")Macintosh Items(/url) and you'll find pleanty of stuff there but a lot of the links were broken and some only worked sometimes.
Whats more is I couldn't for the life of me get the Mac OS 8 to work, I got 7.5.3 but you can't run nova or nova tools on that. Anyway this is getting pretty long and I just want to put together a little guide, and get all the files that worked for me in one place.
Start by getting Basilisk. You will want the x86 one. also, get the manual is you have any questions about basilisk that I can't answer.
Next you will need a ROM image. It is important to know that you need to obtain one of these legally. You need to own the machine you get the image from. That being said there are a number of them available on the net. I have found the best one is the Performa rom.
Now you need OS 8. none of the versions of OS 8 I downloaded worked for me, But I did eventually obtain a copy os it with only the essential files.
Then if you used the essentials OS 8 you will need to upgrade to 8.1 which is easy.
You will need HFV explorer which allows you to create a "volume" for your mac files(this is just a partitioned space that will act like your Mac's hard drive) HFV explorer is also the only way to move files to and from the volume.
Stuffit expander for windows and for mac will aslo be helpful because most of the nova plugs are stuffed with it.
You can use the above links, and/or google to find the files above But I will also be puting all of them together in a .rar archive to share.
