    • EV:Nova bible conflicts itself? Confused

under the ship resource, it says that DefaultItems are set to 128-255 for the item. However, the beginning says that 512 different outfits are allowed. What should this part actually say? Same thing with the weapons. I dont have much to base this on, but it looks like this is still for EV:O. Anyone able to confirm this? Anyone got any other corrections?
      Thanks

    • Yes there are several instances of that type of anomaly within the Nova bible document, even the latest edition of 05JUN03. The best approach is to be guided by the maximums specified in the “Part I - Game Constants” section at the head of the document. Some other minor errors of the same kind that I’ve noticed:

öops resource “Stellar” parameter range should be 128-2175 (not 128-1628)
mďsn resource “AvailShipType” parameter range should be 128-895 (not 128-255)
s˙st resource “Con1-Con16” parameter range should be 128-2175 (not 128-1127)
s˙st resource “NavDef1-NavDef16” parameter range should be 128-2175 (not 128-548)

    • Well I have plug-in with a ship resource that has two DefaultItems, Outf ID 255 and 635. They both show up with the ship when it's purchased, although how the A.I. treats them I don't know.
      (edit)
Forgot that the A.I. don't use the DefaultItems fields. So ignore that last part.

    • A.I. ships do, indeed, use the DefaultItems if they had them -- otherwise, how would A.I. ships cloak?

Indeed, that does seem to be the case - I asked about this discrepancy during the beta period, but I don't think it was ever addressed.

    • Wouldn't it be that a cloaking device has specific checks for the manner in which it is used? For example, "cloaks when running away" but other default items have no such specifications (I think)?

      It sounds about right.

    • But the ship still has to have the item.

I've also got some A.I. ships with cloak detectors in SFA. Trust me, A.I. ships use DefaultItems.

From the EV Nova Resource Bible:

      DefaultItems:
Up to eight default items with which to equip this ship when the player buys or captures one. Note that AI-controlled ships will ignore these fields ; also, don’t put anything in here that isn’t a physical item - i.e. afterburners, shield boosters, and the like are okay, but no fake IDs, maps, etc.

I don't know what your cloak-detecting ships are doing, but they aren't using the DefaultItems field.

    • That's really interesting, because another bit of A.I. behavior I'm seeing is that, even if the cloaked behavior flags are set, the ship still won't cloak unless a cloaking device item is in one of the DefaultItems field.

With all the Romulan and Klingon cloaking going on, I had to test this quite extensively.

I know that's in the Nova Bible, but that's not the behavior from the engine I'm seeing.

    • Well I did a quick experiment, and from what I saw, an A.I. Brave Trader düde would not use either an outfit that's a weapon and neither would it benefit from another outfit that boosted its shields. It seems that cloak outf in the DefaultItems is an exception due to it being flagged in the Ship resource.

    • I haven't done any in-game tests, but looking through the default scenario, the Wraith have their very own outfits, put in as defaults. All the Wraith that cloak have cloaking outfits. The other outfit that seems to have a similar effect is fast jumping- adult wraiths include a fast jump outfit, younger ones don't.

There is a new version of Nova Bible? I didnt know that they had made a version so recently as June 2003. Where can I find it? The previous version was much older, I dont remember how much. Getting it would rock.

The 05JUN03 Nova resource bible was included as part of the EV:Nova 1.0.6 update package. Unfortunately I haven't seen the resource bible posted as a separate document anyplace.

    • EVN for Windows came with the version from April 9, 2003.
