    • Whats up with the new graphics format? (new to EV:N)

      Seems the old sprite and mask system is gone, replaced by RLED and RLE8 resources. What are these, and how are they created? Does anyone know of a place where someone has some custom ship graphics that are free to use in plugins (i remember this old place called the something shipyard with tons of full ship graphics)?

      Come to think of it, where are all the planet graphics? It makes it mighty hard to put in a new planet if one cant just take a standard issue pict and use it as graphics...

      Edit again: I found the Dreamwave studios with all those ship graphics. If i grab a ship from EVC/EVO, can the graphics be converted to EVN (and just look kinda silly) or are the formats totally different? (do they have to be in RLE format to work? If so, can one convert to RLE without a PPC mac?)
      The same goes for the weapon projectile graphics.

      Dude, just make your own! ๐Ÿ™‚ It's so much more satisfying.

      Unfortunately, due to the extra effort that has to go into modelling nova graphics, not many people are willing to give them out just for free to anyone... They don't really charge for them either, you have to convince us to make them for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

      As for RleD and Rle8. Rle8 is eight bit colour, Rled is 16... It allows for better colour depth, while still supporting crappy colour depth. Yah? I'm not exactly sure about the technichalities and reasons behind the change, but someone else will be.

      Spin is still there, but I believe it's mainly for the purpose of looped animations such as running lights and asteroids, weapons etc.

      Yeah... That's about all I can say, I just make the graphics, it aint my job to put em in the damn thing! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Well, I am sure it would be more satasfying to build my own computer by refining the sand into silicon for the chips, but I have neither the skill nor equipment for that ๐Ÿ˜›

      Can old style spins be used in EV Nova for weapon projectiles and ship graphics (albiet at worse appearance)? Would they have to be converted to RLE format?

      Conversion is the way to go here. But don't worry its fairly easy , you can enrle/derle an application that comes with NovaTools , to convert them. I don't have time now to write a long explanation sorry. I'm sure someone will come by and give you a lengthy explanation.

      Nova ships use the shรคn resource for their graphics rather than the spฤn resource. Everything else still uses the spฤn resource, but for purposes of file compression, the RLED and RLE8 resources are used rather than PICT files. You can still use them, though. It's all in the Nova bible.

      RLE stands for run-length encoding and it's a simple form of compression which works fairly well on images. Basically, if you had the string "This is a loooooooooooooooooooong word" that might be compressed to something like "This is a lo20ng word" since there were 20 o's in a row, called a 'run'. Of course, the details are a little more complicated than that but that's the basic idea.

      Does standard nova tools do conversion to RLE? Or is that only handled by the addon they had on the nova tools site? (in the latter case, im outta luck, cause I run the editor on an emulator (ie, not PPC as the converter addon said it needed))

      Its done by a sperate application , and I fear for you its PPC only.

      I'm afraid you do need EnRLE, not just the NovaTools ResEdit additions. Now that EVN for PC is out, the problem you've got may be facing a lot of people. Are there any programmers out there listening?

      Yeah, I go it. Thanks BTW! The update has been brought forward to tomorrow night, as I have been working on it today and its ready to go. I would put it up today, but Im meeting a girl I just started seeing ( ๐Ÿ˜„ )in 50 mins and there is a lot to upload over 56k ๐Ÿ˜› It will be up by 14:00 GMT tomorrow.

      I don't know if this will help or not, but there's a free program called GIMP, available at (url="http://"http://www.gimp.org")http://www.gimp.org(/url) for Macs and (url="http://"http://www.wingimp.org")http://www.wingimp.org(/url) for Windows. It's got a ton of features and can save and load dozens of different image formats. It's even expandable via plug-ins. I'm pretty sure the Targa format (.tga) can use RLE.
