    • Problem with Context and Appleworks

Not owning Excel, I've been using Appleworks to handle Context-outputted spreadsheets. It's worked fine, but I ran into a wierd problem. I made a spreadsheet of just the weapons in the plug, and when I try to import it into Appleworks, it stops about half way through. It is all fine, except for the last row it imports to, where it ends right after the weapon name. This weapon is about #30 out of 60 or so. I checked the source text, and it outputs perfectly. This isn't a problem with any other resource types- they work fine. I first thought it was because that name had an apostraphe character in it, but after taking it out, I found it wasn't the case. Any ideas what's up?

I don't use either Excel or Appleworks, but rather Claris Resolve which is Appleworks' grandaddy. The only time I've ever had trouble importing the tab delimited ConText files into my spreadsheet application is when there are special characters or hidden characters imbedded in the text file. Whenever this happens I use a text editor that is capable of displaying all special characters that are otherwise invisible. I then eliminate the specials and everything works fine after that. The text editor I'm presently using is the shareware (url="http://"http://www.tex-edit.com/")Tex-Edit(/url) which is cheap ($15) and doesn't have any un-registered limitations.

Oh yes, one other thing that will hang up a spreadsheet application is if the data imported exceeds the maximum possible content of a cell. An example would be a string that exceeds 256 characters. You might double check to be sure that the delimiting tabs are actually in the troublesome file.

    • I'll try checking for special characters with BBEdit. I'll report back. Thanks again Arturo.

    • That worked. I used "Zap Gremlins" in BBEdit, and it imported just fine. Thanks Arturo.
