Bleh, I was never satisfied with those old EV remods - they used the most basic methods of modeling. I never found out how powerful Infini-D's spline modeler really was until late last year. Regardless, I'm glad you find the classic remakes satisfactory.
I can do low-poly modeling although I've never rendered a final scene with low patch detail. I don't have any work online that I can think of with a low polygon count. I tend to max it out.
