Probably because he is a crazed Mac zealot that thinks that PCs are universally bad....

As for the method Admiral B suggested, it would probably be legally correct, but would it seriously affect anyone? PC users could just use the plugin transfer tool anyway and nobody would be any the wiser.

      **

I haven't checked the second page yet, so someone might have answered this, but Benden, I'm pretty sure that plugs do not need to be modified for use on a PC (but then I don't have much experience in the matter). It's like writing a book and distributing it nationally, but saying that only people from (let's say) California can read it. I don't believe that a copyright can protect where you want your plug to be distributed. By posting it on the Ambrosia addons site, you've automatically made it available to anyone who visits it. The internet is so undifferentiated that it can't tell whether you're using a PC, or a Mac, thus preventing distribution to PC users is very difficult at best.

Copyrights protect your ideas and your work. For instance, if I made a plug and copyrighted it, and someone took my plug and redistributed it with his name on it, then I have legal grounds to sue. Now if someone took my plug and translated it for his own use, then there's nothing I can do about it.

And Benden, there's nothing wrong with PCs and the people who use them. I'm sorry to say, but Apple simply didn't have a good enough marketing strategy when they needed it, and was nearly drowned in the emergence of Microsoft. Why should we - almost mindlessly - bash PC users? Remember that Apple commercial with the blindfolded people following each other off a cliff (I didn't see it when it aired originally, but did see it when there was a PBS special on Apple in its early days)? By continually bashing PC users, we seem to be taking the path that those businessmen and businesswoman took.

Yes. There's not much you could do about people converting it for their own use, but you could probably at least make it difficult or anyone to distribute a converted version if you had such a condition. You could even explicitly ban the porting of the plug-in to any non-Macintosh platform. On the other hand, I don't know that this would be particularly wise - to me it seems that it would make more sense for you yourself to distribute versions for both platforms, but putting 'Made with Macintosh' logos on and that sort of thing.

Actually, they have to run through a drag-and-drop utility; standard plug-ins use the Macintosh resource fork, which can't easily exist on any other platform.

Actually, while you can't prevent PC users from downloading a plug-in from Ambrosia's archives, it is possible for a server to (reasonably accurately) identify the operating system of a client. I'm currently investigating using this to enable some of my web sites to adapt to user operating systems once EV Nova is cross-platform.

No, but you can prevent the distribution of a modified version.

I think that I implied that, but it wasn't totally clear. Yea, you can't do anything about a person who modifies a file for his own use, but you can if he distributes it.

Whenever you access a web page, your browser sends to the server a 'User-Agent' tag, which identifies to the server what browser and operating system you're using. Some browsers, such as iCab, allow the user to alter this string at will, but it's still a reasonably useful piece of information, especially if you're using it to help your users rather than hinder them.

Interestingly enough that is the case with Visual C++. Anything you create in Microsoft Visual C++ is legaly theirs. You have to buy a "Profesional License Upgrade" to be able to market anything you create with it. ( I know none of you "Mac" people will ever admit to using a PC. hehehe) I have a copy of the Profesional Version and we took a good look at the license before we bought it. They can get pretty shady sometimes. You should check your license for Word. LOL

Thanks for the input, sumpothed, but this topic has been dead for almost 5 months.

First, I didn't think the age of the topic had any relavence at all. Five Months and this Topic was still open. Why hasn't a Moderator closed or deleted this thread yet? You better hurry and find all the old Topics, Matrix before more new people start reading them and think it's ok to reply to them.

Second, in the future, You shouldn't be such an Ass about it.

    • You seem to have an interesting idea about what it is to be an ass. what_is_the_matrix was quite nice in informing you of the general rule about not dragging up old topics. If you want to bring up discussion on a topic that has been dead for a while, you can post a new topic and provide a link to the old one. Old topics do not need to be locked or deleted. This one, and any other topic that gets dragged up after a long time (exceptions will be obvious), will be, however.
