    • Fighter to ship sizes


      I know that there have been people who complain about the sizes of various ships in relation to each other. Hey, I've done it myself. But I am working on a plug right now that will fix that. I need to know who would care, and what ships need resizing. Right now, I'm making the viper variants smaller(by half), the Crusers(fed and Arouran) bigger, and the thunderheads and the other ship which classes as a mid fighter smaller. I am planning on making a plug where the fleets look cooler in relation to each other, and it's going to be mainly Fed vs. Rebel vs. My gvt. I might think about putting other things in it, but I rarely get things done, so only expect the smaller variants of the ships. Anyone who has imput post for now and I'll check to see how what you said compairs with my doings.

    • oh, do what you want, I never really noticed Viper : Fed cruiser ship sizes. whatever.

      What would be cool, though, is if you made a viper have a viper bay... try it. It looks cool.

    • That isn't quite what I had in mind...
      Anyway, I'm now not sure if I'll ever get it done. I am extreamely unmotivated towards this task, as I have many others. I think I'll stick with my origional plan and only develop it for my own personal enjoyment, and IF it works, I'll release it.
      (you'd be amazed at how many of my plugs never get finished, or released)

      Oh I don't know. I have about 15 plugs in various states of development, most will probably stay that way for a long time yet. I have several more that I trashed at the onset of EVN and just kept the graphics. I might finish a few when EVONE comes out. But perhaps not. I also might start a few more and never finish them. 🙂 Oh well, what can I say, perhaps I just don't have enough time, or I'm just lazy.

      But, getting back to ze topic:
      I never complained about ship sizes. If you've ever played EVC in a kestrel, you'll have noted the size of the Lightning fighter-bombers in preportions to the actual kestrel.

      But Vipers shrunk by half... that's REALLY small. about the size of two radar missiles.

      Edit: What I would do would increase the size of the big guys (Cruisers, Carriers, Destroyers, etc.) but not by half, because they would be huge. Case in point: (url="http://"http://www.evula.org/monster/Plugins/schooner_base_test.mov")http://www.evula.org...hooner_test.mov(/url)

    • I was trying to do that origionally, but: first, I don't use fighters anyway, so who cares if they're small? Seconed, photodelux wouldn't let me export to the clippboard on account of the Fed cruiser being too big. The shuttle would stay the same size, and some other ships. If I could do it I'd blow the cruisers up till they took up half the screen. I always liked excessively large ships. Also, I've decided that since it takes forever to do one ship(5 min) I will only be doing the human ships, no Arouran, Polaris, or Vellos. Then, I'll make a plug with them. Again, that's if I've got the time/decide to do so.(I've got to write a children's epic for school, due in a week. I complain "I'm too violent to write a children's book! All my heros die bloody deaths and the human race is anialated by aliens!" as too much EV play starts to show.)

    • Ive seen with the Thunderheads that when there next to an agrosy (SP?) the thunderhead radar is small and the agrosy is huge but the Thunderhead is bigger...

    • I tend to think of ships as a part of two classes. Small, like fighters, and large, like big frieghters and warships. Within each class, the proportions should be fairly accurate. Between the classes, it doesn't really matter all that much.

      My 3 cents, cause I'm richer than all you 2-cents-ers :p.

      Yes, I had a Manticore with a Thunderhead bay... it looks weird.

    • Roight... I was working on something, but I am very distractable, and due to schooling I have temporarly stopped. If someone wants all 3 or 4 viper variants I shrank, I'll send them to you. Anyway, I was also going to edit weapons, and sheilds, and make a new scenario. The fighters would be hard to hit because fighters are hard to hit. They would not do incredible amounts of damage, they are very tiny. They would be able to suicide into ships for some more damage 🙂 (see Khamikazi plug)

    • Ah, perfect place to point this out. Unfortunately, it's about EVC, not EVN, but oh well, I think you people might be interested.

      If you click the link in my sig (then check out the latest news item), I just finished a short article (made up mostly of a nice big chart) about relative ship sizes in EVC. I resized the ships in there so that they're all to scale. You might want to take a look, then realize why games don't make the fighters the size they're supposed to be.

    • Hmmm... That doesn't work so well, does it? I suppose you could set up a psuedo scale, where cube roots of ship lengths were correctly proportional, but that would be a pain.

      Just leave it like it is. I, for one, don't mind when fighters are hard to hit :).

    • Ummm... I wasn't thinking of shrinking all the ships, I also disagree with the leignths. I was thinking it'd be best to base the sizes on the shuttle, or something, but then the fed carrier is (as you said) several screens large, and it won't load. I liked the idea of very small fighters, then there would be a point to having point defence. Very accurate, automatic weapons which target fighters. Hrm... I was also thinking of useing this in a plug, and I would make the ships more proportionate.

      Well, if I had tried to scale the ships up, the Confed Cruiser would be huge (maybe taking several screens) and very pixelly and ugly. So yeah, you're right, it wouldn't have been practical for the purposes of my article.

      I think Ares does a fairly good job with scaling -- the fighters in that game are pretty darn tiny compared to carriers. Of course, planets are still small, but with planets, it'd be impossible to make those to scale in a 2D game.

      But as for anti-fighter weapons, isn't that what flak is for?
