    • you were like me once!

I am a good honest EV/EVO/EVN fan who wants to start making plugins. Simple so far right? however, a few things stand in my way.
1.I have and prefer a mac but do to complications, only have internet access on a dell. this can make downloading difficult. However, I can sometimes burn something to CD and take it to my mac, but only sometimes.
      2. I don't beleive my mac has resedit, and it certainly doesn't have the EVN bible.
3.I hardly know anything about computers other than basic operational skills.
what should my course of action be?
      Questions:
in what form is the bible? can i print it off my Dell and use it, because, if so all i would need would be Res Edit. Please help!

    • So, download ResEdit and take it to your mac.

If you go to the Nova site here, there are links to the bible. It's online, just text. (I guess that's easy, huh? 😉 )

      Hope that helps.

      Is it dial-up or broadband?

In addition to ResEdit, you'll also want NovaTools. Download everything on that site.

I would highly reccomend getting this version of the EVN bible, and transfering it to your mac along with ResEdit. If you wish, you may print out this version, but I find it's easier to find things in the other one on the computer, because it has the linked table of contents.

Oh, and always be sure to work on a backup, not the only copy of your plugin.

Everything I know about computers has ultimately stemmed from plugin development and games... Not that I know a whole lot. 😉

(url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/news/upcoming/novabible.html")This bible(/url) is in a form that's highly printable, but like I said, I reccomend getting the other one to. (And since you're going to be transfering stuff anyways, why not get it?)

As I understand your plea, this wasn't a plea for a big list of downloads; it was a plea for a way to avoid trying to get stuff through a Dell on dial-up and then via an infrequent CD into the Mac.

Perhaps some very nice person would burn a CD with the most useful downloads and mail it to him?

    • I'd strongly recomend printing out the Nova Bible to anyone who wants to make plug-ins. My own hard copy is within arm's reach right now. It is extremely large though, so I also recomend careful editing to remove all empty spaces, and adjust it to be as wide as it can be, all to save paper.

    • Actually, what I do now to transfer stuff to my older Macs now that my PowerMac is dead, is I use my Basilisk emulator to get stuff, copy to disk, and bring the disk to my Mac. Most of the stuff you need should fit on a disk.

    • I am in the same situation as you, Death of Rats. However, if you burn files to a CD, they should work on a Mac, provided you take care to maintain the same file extention. Make sure everything is in .bin format and preferably compressed in a .hqx file. You will need StuffIt Expander on your Macintosh, and preferably DropStuff. If you have any questions, I do have great experience transferring files from Windows to a Mac; if you need help, feel free to email or AIM me.

    • I too ussually download files on my PC and then transfer them to the Mac (56k vs 28k modems).
Most important: to avoid files to corrupt (lose their Resource Fork), they should always be packed in some way (stuffed or encoded: .sit, .zip, .hqx, .bin ...). Installers, applications, disk images, or any other file that requires a resource fork with be destroyed as it enters the PC. There should not be any problems transferring common documents like .doc (they will lose their icons as they reach the Mac, but a simple drag&drop; will work).
For the current prices of blank CDs, I have no problem about using CDRs for transferring files. A multisesion ISO-9660 will work both on PC and Mac and at the same time you create a backup copy of all transferred files. A CDRW is a better solution if your Mac recognize CDRWs (I have an USB CDRW, so it's just a matter of changing the USB wire from one computer to another).

    • First of all I'd like to thank everyone for responding so quickly, I was amazed. However since that sounds a bit like an Oscar acceptance speech I'll get on to business. My internet connection is an RCN cable connection. secondly, on a previous attempt to download the nessacery files and burn them for transfer I ended up with a variety of file unreadable by my mac. can anyone help me on that front?

Do other people use either computer? (For internet?) If they do, buy a router. Trust me, it's well worth the money.

Sounds like their resource fork got nuked. Make sure you transfer the downloaded file, (e.g. ResEdit213.sit) not the unstuffed version.

Yes. You might have to drag and drop it onto a later version of Stuffit Expander for it to be recognized.

(I was doing this back in '93 with floppies - getting networking software onto Macs with no network connection - and never had a problem. What's changed?)

    • This doesn't help all of your situation.

You can download Stuffit 7.5 for windows and install it on the Dell. The only reason I did this was to see the PDF version of the Nova Bible. It allowed windows to "see" the .sit file and I was able to expand it. POOF! Now I have the PDF version of the EVN Bible on my PC 🙂

Anyway, it doesn't solve all your issues, but PDF format is preferable (in my mind) when dealing with mac and pc documents.

    • Silly me. I just found an unstuffed version of ResEdit on my mac. I unstuffed and and all was well, or so it seemed. No whenever I open up an resources I just get hexadecimel rubbish. Do I need Nova tools to make plugs or can i just use Resedit. If so, how? Also the copy of Nova Tools that I have on my PC is a .sit file. is that ok or will the mac not recognize the fork.(badly phrased but you know what I mean)

Frankly, I've never tried to open anything without novatools. But the name should be self explanatory (ie. yes you need it)

The .sit file is the compressed mode of the file, so it should be fine.

Fork? Heck, I eat with spoon and knife 😄

Hah! I know less than you! 🙂

.sit is the compressed file format and should tranfer fine as far as I know.

    • New problem. I have Nova Tools on my computer now but when I open some resources I still get hexadecimel. Also, I don't know how to make a plug in really. I've read the bible (multiple times) but it doesn't tell you the basics of plug creation. How is it (specifically) done.

Have you copied all the NovaTools resources into your ResEdit Preferences file as described in the Read Me?

Go through the resources of the game's scenario and of other plugins (using, of course, a copy) to get a feel for how the engine works. It may help to start out on the original Escape Velocity then move up to the more complicated EV Nova once you understand that.

    • Here's a link to a website with a bunch of turorials for new plug-in developers:
      (url="http://"http://www.oxy-web.com/evnep/tutorials.html")http://www.oxy-web.c.../tutorials.html(/url)

Also, we could tell you everything about plug-in developing here, but you would still have to figure much of it out yourself. Just start with a small plug-in - perhaps a plot extension or small universe extention - and play around with Nova Tools. Eventually, you'll get a good feel for it. The reason I say small is because plug-in developing is a lot of work - much more than most people think it is when they start. Many people dive into too large of a project right off, and then burn out before they finish it and give up on plug-in developing. For a more in-depth read on this (and many, many other things), there's a link in the tutorials section to the Non-Technical EVN Bible.
